Hi,
I've just sold something on Ebay. When the winning bidder tries to pay me however, PayPal tells me that in order to claim my payment I need to set up a business account. I'm not a business, so why do I have to do this?
Also, it seems they are trying to pay me through an old email address that is no longer associated with my PayPal account. Why is this still saved on the system but no longer in my account settings?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

1. You are not allowed to sell on a personal account. You have to have a business account.
You don't have to be a registered business to have one, most sellers on ebay just sell items they no longer want around the house etc and they have business accounts.
When you upgrade to one if you don't have company info (which you won't) then you just select the "individual" option during the registration process.
2. Buyers pay to the paypal email address you have listed on your auction. To check which one you have do this >>>
Go and find the transaction in your “my ebay” > click to the right where it says sell similar > don't fill in anything just scroll down to the payments section > look in the paypal box > is the email addy in there correct with no spelling mistakes? If so then it would have been wrong on your finished auctions so come back for more advice.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Weird, I've been selling stuff on Ebay with this personal Paypal account for years. Is this a new thing that's come into place?... Also the phrasing is really confusing for individual Paypal users just selling their attic junk on Ebay! They really need to rethink thier phrasing.
Anyway, I've set up a business account now but in my annoyance when Paypal asked me what my business name was I inputted 'Absolutly Nothing!'... So kinda need to change this to something else now I've calmed down! How would I go about doing this?
Thanks for your help with this.

No its not new, but it only becomes apparrent to paypal when a buyer pays a paypal payment via a credit card as you can only receive about 3 c.c. payments before you have to upgrade.
So i guess you have been lucky in that your buyers used their bank accounts etc and so paypal did not notice.
It used to be called a premier account but they phased that out and now call it an individual business account, not a particularly brilliant idea on their part i grant you.
No you don't select a business name AT ALL, you ignore that bit and just select individual.

Yeah I selected 'individial' under the business type. The business name is a seperate field which is required... Very much not thought through. Sorted now.
Thanks again for your help.

What happened to the "Premier" account, then? I got an email saying I needed to switch to business or premier, i even looked at paypal's help page and saw what premier was -- and now there's no way to upgrade to it?

The premier has been phased out but only the name.
An "individual" business account is the same as the old premier account.

I have (had?) a Premier account for one organization which allowed me to take multiple credit card payments (no limit) and also to transfer money immediately to my bank account. Does the Individual Business Account have the same features? Can I also take bank eft? I now need to set up a new account for a different group. Will the Individual Business work exactly as my Premier did? Will I be able to print the reports, etc?
