We currently have Standard and use it very successfully on our website. But we need to be able to take credit cards over the counter and we are interested in upgrading to PayPal Advanced.
My question is will making the switch to Advanced break my shopping cart using the Standard API?
Thanks.

That probably won't work as neither product can be used for accepting credit cards in person.
Two other options to consider for accepting credit cards in person - PayPal Here or Virtual Terminal. Both have pros and cons. As PayPal Here does not have a monthly fee, you may want to try it out. Virtual Terminal comes as a stand alone product or bundled with Payments Pro - regardless it's does have a monthly fee $30.00 plus the standard transaction processing fees.
The main difference between Standard and Advanced is when your customers checkout with Standard, they are redirected to the PayPal Checkout Screens, thus they are leaving your web site. With Advanced, the customer is sent to the PayPal Checkout Screens within a window on your web site. They still go thru the same process checking out as Standard but, also remain on your site.
And if you need a third option for accepting credit cards - in person or on the phone or via fax or mail, check out Square. What's different about Square is that the money goes directly to your bank account. Having another transaction processor available is also a great backup - don't put all your eggs in one basket.

When I spoke with PayPal rep, they said that Advanced would do what we want, take cards over a counter. As far as getting redirected or not from the shopping cart, we currently are redirected. We see no reason to change, in fact keeping everything unchanged is important.
No one has mentioned PayPal Here, thank you, I will look into that. ( ahh for mobile devices. Are we the only people who do not want to run our sales through a mobile phone?)
I looked at Square, but I don't see that it works with a web browser just mobile devices. The site is pretty, but I can't seem to find many answers there.
I appreciate the response.
