ERROR: Please enter a valid User ID. - Trying to add a user

I'm trying to add a user to our business account. When filling out the form, I'm asked for a User ID. I've tried countless usernames of 8-16 characters with at least one number, but I keep getting the error "Please enter a valid User ID."

WHAT is a valid User ID in this case, and why is that not mentioned in the error message??!

The directions do say - "A unique ID that is 8 to 16 characters long and contains only letters and numbers. Choose the user ID carefully; once assigned, you cannot change it."    What's interesting is, I've created ID's that were all letters (in uppercase) and that worked fine.  Note, the user ID is not an email address like you use to login into your account - it's just a name that you come up with.   Suggest starting with a clean web browser session - before you login into your account again - delete your browser's cache, cookies, history and temp files, close the browser and retry creating a new ID.

But now how does this user log in? She can't use the new username to log in?!
