I just saw the fees attached to a very small no reserve auction that ran through eBay. The auction closed at $2.15 will no charge for shipping. PayPal charged me $.36 to receive the payment which is a whopping 17%!!! Why so high? After paying a 10% fee to eBay and my cost for shipping, I almost gave the card and my time away for free. 27% to PayPal and eBay is ridiculous IMO. Any ideas why the percentage is so high?

tt seems you need to manage your pricing and business better.
PayPal charges $0.30 for each transaction and then 2.9% of the total.
If you think the fees are too high you can raise your selling price or find a different payment processor which fits your needs better.

domestic transaction -30 cents plus 2.9%
cross border transaction- 30 cents plus 3.9%
come Mar 29.2017,cross border discount fee would be 4.4% instead of 3.9%
if you sell many low price items and accept paypal payment, you want to apply for micro payment which is 5 cent transaction fee and 5% discount fee for payment $12 or less.
but it would apply to all your payments for that account,so if you ever sell a high ticket item,it would cost you more.
also come mar 29,overseas transaction under micro payment is 6 -6 1/2 %

I may just need to use another payment method as 17% is just too high. And yes, I sell lot of smaller items from $3.00-$20.00. Until recently I never knew PayPal charged anything. I swear 10 years ago they didn't charge to receive money. Maybe I'm wrong. Seems like they hold your money interest free, there should be no fee or a nominal fee or a fixed rate of 2-4% with no additional flat fee attached. My guess at these rates they are making giant profits. Sad when eBay and PayPal take such a large percentage. Not worth selling with such huge marins on the expense side.

long long time ago,Paypal offers a personal account where seller can receive non credit card payments,as long as your buyer pays you with Paypal fund or bank t ransfer,Paypal does not charge a fee.
But that has changed, personal account can now accept credit card transactions.
With credit card transactions, the bank which provided Paypal with a merchant account to accept credit card charges a fee for each transcation-there is a transaction fee and a discount rate .
It depends on volume, stores like Walmart would get a better rate than say a small gift store,Paypal would get a favorable rate say it is 10 cents per transaction and 1% discount rate from its banks.
So the difference of what you pay and what bank charges PAYPAL is the profit for Paypal to meet its expenses, for keeping the website up 24 hours da y and 365 days a year accessible to members from 205 countries, customer service, accounting, marketing, management, salary, rent ,utilities, insurance etc etc.
no one works for free,we tend to forget that ,we are all in for a profit.
you can sell on Craigslist and ask for check or money order or cash,or find another payment processor and venue which charge less.
I would still say micro payments would be good for you, just make sure if you ever sell high ticket items, sell it under a different Ebay ID and accepting paypal under a different paypal account.
5 cents plus 5% for domestic is as cheap as you can get .
Oh,there is also a 15 cents credit transaction fee,if your buyer returns the item, and you refund him from the original transaction, there could be a credit transaction fee of 15 cents as it is considered a separate transaction, this is how credit card works,it goes thru an infrastructure which authorise buyer credit card,it sends payments thru the network to the bank which issues your buyer his credit card and then turn around and deposit what it collects into your paypal account,it is not as simple and straight forward, given the sheer number of cards issued by many banks

Thanks for the info. I assumed like a bank they make their money off of the interest free account for members. I can understand a 3-4% fee on credit card transactions, but again, they took 17% on my measly transaction. That wold make a loan shark blush.

IT IS NOT 17%,it is 30 cents transaction fee and 2.9 % discount fee.
if you accept credit card, you will be charged a transaction fee and a discount fee.
your issue is that you sell low price items, raise the price or sell higher price items.
Take someone who sells $100 item, transaction fee would still be 30 cents, discount fee is 2.9% which comes to $2.90 ,so total is 3.20
3.20/100 x 100= 3.2%

Got similar problem: have transfered to me 20$ but got only 18.62 The bad point is this is just internal paypal transaction, no money came to my debit card. From now I'll start avoid to use paypal as payment method and avoid any service which accept paypal only.

looks like you are being charged 30 cents plus 5.4%.
