Fatal error msg on payment

I regularly use Paypal and haven't had any issues until this one - just trying to ascertain the source (me or seller), Basically I get signed in to make the payment & everything looks ok up to that point but then I get a screen with nothing other than "Fatal error" in the top left. No info on where that originates from. It is going through the Express Checkout I think & one weird thing was that I saw the msg regarding the One-TOuch concept of not requiring a password yet then I got the page asking for it. I have the site protected under browswer and plugin apps (incl Rapport) so don't think it's a hacked page etc.
I've tried to make the payment 5 or 6 times now & am concerned that somwhere behind the scenes perhaps it is doing just that & I'll end up overdrawn when it sorts itself out,
Any ideas?
This is with a UK website & seller etc (not Ebay).

I have gotten that fatal error message before and very recently but not for checkout though. I just use the 'back' browser button or closed the browser tab and start over.

Thanks so much for responding - discovered it's actually a Paypal issue with some shops that use the Pro payments carts etc so is a known problem & in hand.
Sorting out a secondary method of payment with the site shortly :).
