Paypal Asking My Son for a COPY of social security card????

My son is in college, has a checking acct with a debit card.  I am on his account and he says because of that issue, Paypal wants a copy of his actual social security card, to establish his identity!  He is trying to create his own Paypal account.  I never had to give my social, ever!  This sounds fishy to me.  He also said because I receive all the banking statements at home and he's at a different location, that they need to establish his identity!  He has a driver's license, birth certificate, mail with his name/address on it, etc.  I am extremely concerned and refused to give this to him.  Why are they doing this?  Thank you.

What do you mean, you are on your son's account?  Is it your account or his account?  it can't be an account for both.

Is he also trying to create his own account?

I think we need to clear up what is really going on before moving on to verifying a new account.

SSN/s are definite NOT fishy, but a new requirement along with with matching names and addresses on bank accounts.

If you attempt to crossover acocunts, you may get all your accounts limited due to security controls.

Ok, maybe I should clarify.  My son is in college and we set up a checking account for him and I'm co-owner.  We are BOTH named on the account.  I have had my own Paypal for years, under my own checking account.  He is trying to set up his OWN Paypal account, using this joint account.  He claims paypal told him they need to "establish his identity" and asking for a COPY of his actual SS card!!!  I don't recall giving anything like that to Paypal when I opened mine.  Just verified my bank account and my address for ebay purposes.  Why are they giving him such a hassle?  I really hesitate to copy his card and have him email it to Paypal.  He does have a driver's license and a birth certificate, if they want to "establish" his identity.

things have changed, you will be asked for your SS number as well,if you have not given them your SS number.

What is so bad about giving your SS number,I would rather give my SS number than my passport or birth certificate.

You son should get his own bank account and link that account to his paypal account.

I have never given my ss to Paypal, even though they ask.  This checking account IS my son's.  I'm on it in case of problems or emergencies and he can't handle it from New York, when we're in Illinois.  My daughter and her "significant other" share an account and she never had a problem signing up with paypal because he's also on it?

Doesn't matter, when PayPal asks for the info, supply it or risk your son not being able to open or keep the account.  Sure, people CAN share an account in theory as long as it is one person's name on the account and on the financial instruments.  And there are probably a ton of accounts that were opened in all kinds of ways prior to these new regulations came into effect.  Now they have to ask.  Or they haven't gotten around asking for documents on your daughter's account.

The Patriot Act, KYC and AML (Google it).  And because everyone should have their own account.  No sharing.

The Justice Dept just subpoenaed PAYPAL for possible money laundering,so dont expect Paypal to relax any of these rules.
