Paypal Credit snail mail scam?

Hi,

First time post here.  I have a small PayPal account that doesn't see much activity.

Today, I received a letter that looks like an email phishing scam, except it is a paper letter delivered by the USPS.  It claims to be from "Comenity Bank c/o PayPal Credit" and says suspicious activity was recently detected on a PayPal Credit account opened using my name and personal info (I don't have a PayPal Credit account).  It asks me to call 888-361-0687 to verify this activity.

Does this sound like a legitimate communication from PayPal or a scam?

It's good you asked here before responding.  Too many users make the mistake of answering phishing and scams before asking.

There are several things you can do before you decide.

First, do a Google search for the 888-361-0687 phone number and look at comments; compare the number to the toll-free number on the PayPal Credit web site; they don't match.

Conclusion the letter if NOT from PayPal Credit.

For this type of letter, check the return address printed on the envelope.  Is it full company name and address with PayPal Credit logo?  My guess is not.

Best thing now:  call PayPal Credit on the number on the PayPal Credit web site; that way you will get to PayPal.  Let them know you got the phishing letter so they can handle it.

Be glad you avoided a disaster.

Thanks for the tips.  I called PayPal support and it turns out the letter is legit.  A couple of months ago, someone opened a PayPal Credit account using my name & address, but a different email.  It's closed now.
