I don't want to pay seller protection fees. Is there an opt-in or opt-out option? If not, essentially I'm forced to pay for a service I don't want?!
If not, very disappointing. I will be selling via Gumtree from now on. I've been duped and I'm pretty hacked off about that!

There is NO fee for seller protection so you don't have to opt in or out.
ALL sellers pay fees to be able to accept payments from buyers including credit cards.
Did you think paypal was a charity and their staff don't want any wages at the end of the month??
To be honest without paypal buyer protection its unlikely anyone would send money to a stranger so unlikely you would sell your item in the first place.

Actually, I've reviewed my transaction history carefully. For every payment I've received there is a line item, "seller protection", showing a deduction from every payment received for that service. Whereas, there are zero transaction or "seller" fees. PayPal evidently makes its profit from the unadvertised fees for this obligatory service.
Clearly every business has to have a business model that works. However, personally, I find it unethical to advertise free buying and selling, but not advertise that the seller protection is an obligatory fee that you must pay. I'd prefer that, like eBay, PayPal is open about the % of your total sale that they will take. Both companies bundle protection for the buyer into their fees. However, eBay is open about the cost of doing business through them. PayPal isn't. Thus, my indignation.
Thank you for insightful comments, though.

There is free buying.
There is A FEE FOR SELLING.
If you can manage to scroll down to FEES at the bottom of every paypal page you will see there is a fee for EVERY selling transaction.
Seller protection is provided as long as you meet the criteria BUT THERE IS NO CHARGE.
Even folks that don't have seller protection still pay a FEE to accept a paypal payment for selling.
Paypal DOES NOT offer free buying AND SELLING. Only free BUYING.

Yes, there is an opt-out feature for seller fees: Do no use PayPal, but opt out of PayPal and use a different seller service. You do have options; use that which you prefer.
