Major account discrepancies

Hello,

I haven't used paypal in years, but there is a purchase that I need to make with a merchant who accepts paypal only. I tried to use my email address to reset my long-forgotten password, and this is what happened: (1.paypal needed verification, so I chose email verification code. (2. I entered the code I was emailed, but paypal needed a 2nd verification method. (3. The only other verification methods offered were linked to a phone number that is not mine and that I didn't recognize at all. (4. I refreshed the log in page and attempted step 1 again, only this time, the email I received with the verification code addressed me by a name that is absolutely NOT mine.

There is an incredibly flawed paypal contingency that requires a person to log-in to their account before receiving assisstance. Therefore, I had to create this account to find out what the hell is going on with the incorrect name and phone # that is inexplicably linked to my older account. Therefore, the account that this message is linked to is not the one I'm asking about. This whole experience has left me incredibly frustrated, and I would really like to know why someone named Maude with a phone # and area code that isn't mine is associated with my email address, and why I have to use such a convoluted procedure in an attempt to resolve such a glaring innacuracy.
