If I hand deliver item to customer instead of shipping, will Paypal release the payment to me?

I sold an item on Ebay this week and was to provide free shipping. The purchaser contacted me and asked to receive it by saturday. We live close enough that we decided that we could meet instead of shipping the item. Now I wonder how Paypal will know that the purchaser received the item... so as to release the payment to me. Any answers out there?

If you didn't list the item as available for local pickup, should something go wrong, you may not qualify for seller protection.
Once the buyer has committed to purchasing the item, you can't change the terms of the sale.
