Difference between adding credit/debit card as opposed to linking bank account?

I'm not too good with using this, but i was wondering what is the difference between adding your credit/debit card as opposed to linking your Bank Account? I used to have an old paypal and when i used to buy on ebay, i would just verify my bank account details on the purchase page and then its done. But now i am getting confused with the whole card thing?

Can you please give me the understanding of this.

If you have a debit or credit card paypal will take your payment automatically from there.

If you have "only" a bank account listed then you can still pay but it will go as an echeque and take a few days to clear.....HOWEVER if you add a debit or credit card as well then payments from your bank account will then clear instantly.

This is because when you pay a seller it is never instant > paypal pay the seller for you and then start the process of uploading the funds from your funding souce. With a bank account to reduce risk of the payment failing they like you to have a back up card registered on paypal as well.

You can change your payment method if you liike during the payment process by clicking on "other funding sources" at the top of the page.

The above applies BUT the only difference is that when a buyer pays a seller they need to be able to transfer that payment from their paypal balance to their bank accounts. You can only do that if you have a bank account linked to your paypal account as in the UK you can't transfer funds from your paypal balance to a debit or credit card.

I keep trying to add my debit card to my paypal account but it gets rejected as they say I can't use it with an additional account.  That's strange as I only have the one account. Just what is going on and why will nobody sort it for me?

Have you ever had another paypal account in the past now closed or not used or does a partner have one and use that card on it??

Ahhh i see. Does that mean i would have to update my bank card if i were to lose it?

Also what if i have 2 debit cards with different account numbers? Will PayPal allow me to add them both? and will i then be able to choose which card/account number for the payment to come out of when purchasing on Ebay?
