PayPal App & Security Key log in issues

Hi all,

We are aware that customers who have the security key are experiencing issues logging into PayPal through the mobile app.

We have temporarily disabled access to our app for those using the PayPal security key. If you have the security key activated on your account and wish to log in through your phone can we suggest for now using your mobile browser rather than the app, this should resolve the issue.

We are working on improving this feature as a priority and will be sure to keep you updated.

Phone# and pin says they don't match... Tried changing and verified i can log into paypal app with them, but not ebay mobile or newegg. If i use username and password it tells me to try again with the security key at the end of my password. It acts like it worked, but than goes back to the login screen but it doesn't say anything is wrong. So i enter user name and password again and it says try again with security code after the password again, just looping. I have been trying to get this working so long now... why does paypal not seem to care.

I'm foaming at the mouth about this issue. We enable 2-factor authentication so that our Paypal account is more secure, but then depending on where we log in (i.e. what store we're buying from) we get a seemingly random choice from a neverending bucket of login screens, some of which will direct to the 'Send SMS' screen, and some of which will just punt you back out in an infuriating loop.

Try using Ebay and Paypal together? Should be a dream but it's a nightmare. Seems to work fine on desktop where you can link the accounts and it doesn't even ask for auth when you pay, but if you're using the Ebay mobile app or in a mobile browser, you simply can't pay for your purchases.

Every so often you'll get a screen that suggests you add the security key onto the end of your password, but offers no means of aqcuiring a key.

The last part of most transactions I make online is through Paypal and it invariably causes the good UX experience to screech to a halt and I end up swearing at my screen.

So what do I do? Disable 2-factor auth, making my account less secure but making mobile transactions at least possible?

I'm yet to see an implementation of 2-factor authentication that doesn't ruin experience, but this is by far the worst and most infuriating.

Interesting to see that, for ma anyway (iPhone 6, apps all up to date), this is STILL NOT WORKING FOR MOBILE PAYMENTS. I even deleted the app, but still got stuck in the security key issue and no text sent or received. So, like so many others, I deactivated the security key. Now I can use PayPal for mobile purchases, but I've also lost their much-hyped 2-stage authentication. When will PayPal start behaving like a REAL company?

I have 2fa via sms enabled and I too found it impossible to log in. I don't use eBay or PayPal apps, just the websites in Safari on my iPad

the PayPal mobile site seems to expect 2fa users to have a physical key and forever asks me to append the number from it to my password.. Naturally this doesn't work with sms 2fa and they never send a new sms upon failed login

the workaround is to use a mobile browser that can fake it's user agent string, set the user agent to that of a desktop browser and then PayPal will show you the full desktop site that does at least work properly for 2fa sms users

dont be hopeful that they will fix it soon, I expect the pool affected users is tiny and quite easy to ignore

How can a company as big as Paypal not get their **** together and fix this. If I try to log in to via the Ebay app on iPad it just keeps saying my log in credentials are wrong. I'm using the Symantec VIP security app which authenticates fine on a PC. I bascially cannot by anything through an IOS device on ebay.

Because, as someone else said above, the pool of affected users is quite small and easy to ignore.

Conor has gone shtum on the issue, after having posted a link to a useless knowledge base article.

To dishearten you further, have a read in this thread which has been running since 2011 without resolution.

PayPal, over the years, has changed from a technology company into a full-blown and recognised financial institution, and with that transition comes only taking money from their customers without listening to them.

Sadly, at least on eBay, there is no alternative, and, therefore, no competition to challenge PayPal's monopoly on digital payments.

What (modern) customers need is support for modern technologies such as U2F (with NFC, like the Yubikey NEO) support that would make 2FA login a simple 2–step process.

The vast majority of people, however, have no concept of 2FA or why they need it, and for those people PayPal's login methods just work, meaning that PayPal can continue to ignore users like you and me without losing any money (or sleep) over it.
