Paying a deposit on an Ebay item

What's the procedure for sending a deposit to the seller? The Ebay checkout defaults to the full amount. Advice appreciated.

You can either ask your seller to send you an invoice/money request for the deposit amount or if you know the sellers email address you can send your payment through the send money tab.
