Possible fraudulent Direct Debit.

I purchased an item during December 2010 (3rd December 2010) and the payment was made through PayPal. A few days later (7th December 2010) a quarterly direct debit was setup against my bank account for the self same amount. I had not agreed to any direct debit payment through Paypal so i therefore cancelled the bogus DD directly with my bank.

I searched your site for some method of complaining about this and found nothing suitable despite trying to log a complaint. I then received an e-mail form yourselves stating that the Direct Debit had failed when presented to the bank. I then received a second e-mail stating that my bank account had been removed as a payment method from my PayPal account. I am concerned that a number of people may have encountered a similar circumstance to myself. I wish to have the potential fraudulent activity investigated and my bank account re-instated post haste. How can this be completed expeediantly? Many thanks

Hi sunts1,

When you confirm your bank account on your PayPal account you complete a direct debit mandate form to allow us send the two small deposits to your bank statement. This allows you to send payments using funds from your bank account. On your statement it will show as a direct debit payment. Rest assured that only payments that you initiate will be taken from your bank account.

If the direct debit is cancelled your bank account is removed from your PayPal account as we no longer have the agreement set up to use your bank account as a funding source.

If you wish to have your bank account re-add to your PayPal account I would suggest that you go to the Profile tab on your account overview screen and click on the bank account section.

Finally if you wish to file a complaint please click on the Resolution Centre were you will be given the option to file your complaint.

I hope this helps

Thanks Paula but my gripe is that an attempt was made to remove funds from my bank account via Paypal  without my acceptance or approval. Having tried to use the reolution centre complaint procedure i received no reply.

I am aware this may have been because i had no transaction code to attribute to the bogus request for funds. I did however send the e-mail element of the complaint procedure and waited the specified 10 days. How can I possibly initiate an investigation if Paypal do not include a procedure linked to this type of complaint!

If I do re-register my bank account how do I know that the bogus request for funds will not be re-instigated? Many thanks.

Hi,  I have just found out that I have the same  problem as Sunts. Went to my bank on Friday to cancel a direct debit ( non-paypal), while there got the teller to verify my other direct debits set up on my a/c. Lo and behold , a quarterly Paypal DD was set up on 12/12/2012. On checking my Paypal history , an item I bought on the 8/12/2012 was for the exact amount (£16.94) and transaction was completed. I was very pleased with the item, but do I have to pay for it every quarter for the rest of my life??? I will of course be going back to the bank and cancelling the DD, if my Paypal a/c doesn`t work after that,at least I won`t be getting ripped off .  Who set up the quarterly DD-- was it the merchant I bought the £16.94 item from? or was it Paypal?.. If i leave the DD active- who gets my money every quarter?

Can anyone answer these questions please,

Regards

AMF

Hi sunts1,

Can you see the transaction on your previous account history? Have you tried going back to when the payment was debited from your PayPal account?

If you are unable to see the payment, you should try contacting us directly so that we can investigate this further on your behalf. If we can see that there was payments sent from your account without your permission, we would refund the payments back to your account.

I can't give you a definitive answer as to if this would ever happen on your account again. I can only advise that if there has been any payments taken from your account without your permission, they would be fully refunded to you. It is however very unlikely that this would happen to you again.

David.

Hi meeky2710,

As this is a community forum I cannot provide you with a specific response. I would suggest that you review your recent transactions on your PayPal account to view what the amount of £2.37GBP was for.

I would advise that if you are sending payment using your bank account all payments will show as a direct debit and this is the way the funds are requested.

I hope this helps

Hi David!

My problem belongs to this topic, but is slightly different:

The money £17.52 has been taken from my Bank account by PayPal, although I have got enought money on PayPal balance, furthermore this record is not shown in my PayPal activities. After some reserch I found quarterly Direct Debit on this amount of money, but again it is not shown in my PayPal activities

Could you please advice how I can find out the track of this transaction: to whom, why from bank account, but not PayPal account, and why there is no any record on this amount of money in my PalPal cabinet?

Thank you in advance

Best regards

Taras

Hi there Taras,

Welcome to the Community Forum!

It sounds like your payment is either the GBP amount of a payment you sent in another currency & this is why you are not seeing the total amount of £17.52 GBP or that this is part of a larger payment where you had a small balance already in your PayPal account at the time of making the payment.

What I will say to you is to look back on payments made in the week or so previous, click on 'details' next to the payment & you will see the breakdown of how you paid.

Come back & let us know how you get on!
