If you receive notification advising that your bank have returned a direct debit to PayPal, this means that your bank may have refused a payment that you sent through your PayPal account recently.
When this happens, we would try to debit the funds from your back up funding source which may be a credit/debit card on your account. If this payment is successful, then the issue would be resolved. If for any reason the payment is refused on your card also, it could result in a negative balance on your PayPal account until the funds are received to resolve the transaction amount.
