Send money to Australia

I am confused about all these different fees for sending money abroad.

I want to send my son, who lives in Australia, a gift of some money from my UK account. I'm sure he will open a PayPal account to receive it and then transfer it to his Ozzy bank account. I want him to end up with 50 AUD in his bank - what will be the total amount this will cost me if I pay/cover all the charges?

I cannot give you an exact figure as when your transaction involves a currency conversion, we provide you with a choice of whether we perform the currency conversion (at our exchange rate), or your credit card company performs the currency conversion (at their exchange rate).

•  If PayPal performs your currency conversion, we disclose the conversion rate to you at the time of the transaction
•  If you choose to use your credit card company’s currency conversion procedures, we will not be able to display the conversion rate.

Many thanks for the reply.

Am I right in thinking that the PayPal charges would be something like this;

£35.01 transferred from my bank a/c to my PayPal a/c - no charge

£35.01 converted by Paypal to 50.55 AUD (Paypal converter shows 1GBP=1.44377AUD)

Transfer to Australian PayPal a/c                                  - less 0.5% cross border fee (50.55 - 0.25 = 50.30)

                                                                                       - less 0.30AUD fixed fee (50.30 - 0.30 = 50.00)

50AUD transferred to Australian bank a/c                     - no charge

Is this correct?
