paypal returned an error

I was attempting to make a small purchase recently (about $5), paypal was using the correct card (as far as I can tell) but whenever I try to pay I get the following message:

"Paypal returned an error: The transaction cannot completesuccessfully. Instruct the customer to use an alternative payment method"

Has anyone had this problem before/ does anyone know what the problem might be or how to solve it? There isn't an alternative method of payment for this particular transaction so I would really appreciate any help.

That sounds like you're going through someone else's website when making a payment. 'PayPal returned an error' would mean that something is going wrong when the payment is attempting to be made .

Could be being denied by PayPal or your bank, you might need to have to contact customer service for full information if the website you're buying from is just telling you there's been an 'error' with PayPal but no specifics.
