NOT BUYING USING EBAY - AM I STILL COVERED BY BUYERS PROTECTION????!!!

Hey Guys..

I am looking to make a purchase of a camera i have seen on gumtree - the seller has asked me to make full payment and then he will send the item...

I just wanted to know - if i make a payment - and this guy ends up not sending the camera - will i still be covered by the Buyers Protection - even if im not using EBAY?????? dont want to make the purchase and get stung.. only to find out im not covered....
