Full refund on faulty goods potentially not straightforward

Hi, I have bought a desktop cnc machine from Vevor UK which is  a Chinese company which holds stock in Germany. I started assembling the device, modifying it as I went to my own needs when I find an essential part of it is faulty, not just a quality issue during manufacture but a design fault.
I have sent a video of the fault to the company as requested and they are currently mulling their response.
Their usual tactic is to offer partial refunds and you keep the goods but to be honest I would probably prefer a refund.
Does my modification to parts of the machine (drilling a few extra holes in acrylic sheet) not affected by their design fault nullify my chances of a full refund?

Many thanks, Laurence
