I can't believe that paypal charges fees on postage. So, I had an item that sold for .99 cents and postage was $5.95 -> Ebay took .09 cents and paypal took $.50 (2.9% + $.30 for each transaction) so my net profit was $.40. Why bother??? Also, any lawyers out there - is it legal to charge on postage???

It's customary for payment services and merchant account providers to base their fees on the total payment amount... item price plus shipping/handling.

I agree why bother !!!! I'm selling items for $1.75, because well... they're just not worth more than that. Shipping each of these items is .64 cents. When I charged shipping, nobody would buy them !!! Sooooo FREE shipping. Ebay says this is great. Automatic 5 stars.........Okay. So I try to stay positive. Ebay charges .21 cents for each one I sell. Then I log into Paypal and find out they charged me . 36 for each one!! Yeaaaa ! I made .54 cents on something that is well worth $1.75.
It's ridiculous what I have to go through just to make a dollar!!!
Why does Paypal feel they have the right to charge more than Ebay ????? Why the **bleep** are they basing it on last months sales?? I did pretty good last month.........I'm doing horrible this month. Yet, I'm paying Paypal more. Does that make sense??? It's no wonder everyone I'm talking to says they're going to ditch Paypal. No one can make any money ! I sold a higher priced item the other day, and by the time I payed all the fees, payed for packaging, and payed for shipping..................I could have made more money listing it on Craigslist.
When my listings are ended..................I'm DONE. It's just not worth it.

You should look into getting a PayPal Micropayments account... the standard Micropayments fee is 5% plus 5 cents. For a $1.75 payment, the standard PayPal fee (2.9% plus 30 cents) is 35 cents... the Micropayments fee (5% plus 5 cents) is 14 cents.

i visited the link for the micropricing it really doesnt clarify alot of things you are still charging the seller the use this service when the buyer is suppose all shipping fees and we as sellers are being pentalized for using this service but if we dont what is the alternative to paypal checks that bounce people that dont pay and how are we to know that the buyer is using a credit card or debit card weather it is a paypal card or not the buyer should be absorbing these cost i am still excited about ebay but it will slowly fade if there is not a resolution soon. after thinking this was all in miind that these were not real i will be force to do something else also i was under the impression that paypal was part of ebay but where is the connection, i wonder if you guys even realize how many fees are imposed us as sellers so who is making the profit i guess the old saying beware of hidden well i am finding them more and more everyday

I have been discouraged with PayPal's practice for some time now. I sell trains which sometimes are very heavy and cost a lot to ship. I think there should be something illegal to this. Charging on profit I have no problem with, but postage fees are not something I profit on. I think a class action suit might be in order.

no it is not legal to charge you to print the label and the postage i checked with the postmaster general they are not allowed to make a profit from a government agency so maybe if we all go the postoffice to get the labels for shipping they may understand that charging 2,9 percent is also out rageous since we have to pay ebay fees as well and im sure you were just like me thought paypal was cool but when you make 46 cents on an item and the more you sell the they make but we are pretty much forced to use paypal but there is a way to print the postage through the postal service that im checking on because i cannot find this feesible to pay these fees for ebay and paypal plus the time you put in for 46 cents even walmart cant over charge for a single stamp so when i find out more i will definately post it to let you know

PayPal doesn't charge you to print the shipping label... PayPal charges only the payment receiving fee. When you print your shipping labels through PayPal shipping, the shipping charge is sent to the post office.

Yours is an interesting read on the postage fees that PayPal is charging us. You mentioned that you were checking out the post office to find out if that was a way for us to go. Did you find out anything encouraging?
