History:
I made a purchase for $93 and paid for it immediately through ebay. The seller contacted me and said that there is a glitch in the ebay system where the payment was sent to his expired email address through paypal. He asked me to cancel the transaction to his "old" paypal account, which I did. I received the money back from paypal. He asked me to then send money via email address in paypal, outside of ebay. I'm concerned in doing this because It doesn't feel right to complete a transaction outside of ebay. I don't want to pay $93 to a paypal account that isn't linked to the auction, in fear that he will then say that I never paid him.
As a buyer, am I protected through paypal or ebay if I complete the transaction this way?
Below is a history of our conversation.....(sorry for the novel)
Dear Roy -
Hi, I am sorry but there is a glitch with my listing from which you bought your knife. The email address was wrong and payment has gone to that dead email address. Could you please cancel payment and pay once again using my current email address which is:
Sorry for the inconvenience. Because I am blind I had my son list these for me and he didn’t change that detail.
Regards, bob

.Dear Bob (Seller)
I don't believe I can cancel a payment through paypal unless I file a
grievance for not receiving the item. If you issue me a refund for my
purchase, I will then send another payment. I won't send payment for an
item twice, especially for one I haven't received yet. Please advise.

Dear Roy, I know this is so all convoluted and I'm sorry. I have been on the phone with both EBay and PayPal and they said if you look on your PayPal account the payment is listed as unclaimed. You can cancel then repay. the items are on their way and when my son comes I will get you tracking info. I sent items before receiving payment, which Ebaya says I shouldn't have. Just use the new email address as my verizon has been dead for over 2 years. This is a glitch in the Ebay system as I have fixed this a couple of times and it doesn't want to keep my new address.
best regards, bob

Dear Bob (seller):
At your request, I was successful in canceling the payment to your paypal account that is linked to your eBay account. I am going to contact eBay and paypal tomorrow to make sure that I'm covered under their buyer protection policies, if I send payment to your paypal account that is not linked to the eBay auction. If so, I will have no problem sending payment to your other paypal account. I'm sorry if I sound sceptacle, but I've never ran into this problem before and want to protect myself. $93 is a lot to lose, and I just want to complete this transaction legitimately. Thank you for your understanding. - Roy

Roy, I would do the same thing. I would understand. I spent hours with EBay yesterday and there is a glitch in their system. I finely got them to admit it this morning at 1:30 AM. Somehow invisible and in the background code is my old email address. so when I created a these listings, it showed payment was to go to my new paypal address. so I just went forward thinking all was well. but in the hidden code was a dead email address...that's what shows up for you. When I go to either PayPal or EBay to remove that old address, it doesn't exist, so I can't change what doesn't show up in my account. It's maddening. I don't know if I told you, and I may not have for the same reasons why you are hesitant to send the money, I already sent your knives. this put me in the position where EBay was asking me to have my buyers cancel payment and just pay me through PayPal. Because I had already shipped, I felt very vulnerable indeed. I know I could have got my money either from the buyrs or EBaybut it would be a hastle.

He's lying.
The old paypal address is not held in "hidden code". I doubt that he's blind, either - how could a blind man describe the items? Or use the screen?
AND, if he was able to cancel the payment, he'd have access to the paypal account - he could have downloaded the money from there.
If he's refunded you, then tell him to forget about the sale and DON'T agree to a mutual cancellation. I don't want this jerk getting his fees back.

surplusdealdude, you're the only person who's blind here.
Now check this out: you selling something through eBay and messed up / misspelled / did typos etc. somehow your PayPal confirmed e-mail address (upon creating eBay listing) you will never receive your payment due to impossibility to confirm expired (if you used to have paid hosting and e-mail with it) or nonexistent e-mail. It is easy as 1-2-3 to understand.
And nobody cares about fixing problem - neither eBay nor PayPal. They say: "the best option for you is to contact your client/customer..."
So, what seller suppose to do to convince customer to pay for item?
My suggestion is simple: on any concern you have with info check/verification contact PayPal customer service.
If you use Send Payment -> Purchase - eBay Item - Correct sellers e-mail it automatically mark that you sent you payment or checked out at eBay website (they are integrated!!!!). In this case you fully protected: you paid for your item you won on eBay, you specified the same item upon sending payment through PayPal, you used your own PayPal account and eBay account that both verified. Simple logic.
surplusdealdude, "I don't want this jerk getting his fees back".... Let me know when you get items for sale, I'll get you some hard core business to deal with, may be then you'll understand who is jerk!
Good luck!

If you pay outside of Ebay, like straight from somebody's webiste you have no protection. If they send you an empty box and have receipt of you accepting it, that is now the item you purchased. It is now considered Not As Described, and that is not covered. They only cover you if you receive nothing at all.
