PayPal Encryption Cipher Question

Due to the huge security breach of Sony's PlayStation Network, I have certainly become more aware of the potential risks consumers take when providing companies sensitive information.

On this community forum, for instance, I have noticed that PayPal uses a 256-bit AES cipher, but in my PayPal account, a triple DES encryption cipher is used at 168-bits.  Can someone explain why this is?  Why doesn't PayPal use 256-bit AES encryptions for users when they log into their accounts?
