I know that sounds dumb. But I've designed a form to register people for a conference, and the organizers want to offer a free option for people who are just coming to look around. I don't have a database, so I don't have any other way (short of a clumsy email) to collect their info. I'd love to be able to send all that through paypal, just like the paid registrations. I'm assuming the answer's no, since it's PayPal, not FreePal, but it never hurts to ask.

Free Item or Making Invoice with 0.00 amount
PayPal's Shopping Cart has some limitations. PayPal requires at least 1 cent to complete the transaction process. Although you can process a payment for 1 cent, you will not see any funds in your account because this amount would be less then the transaction fee. You can have a free item in your cart as long as the cart has another item with an amount of at least 1 cent. You cannot have a free item by itself. Should you try, when you proceed to Check Out, you will get an error message.

I also tried to list a free item - along with several paid items. I still get an error message even though there is a payable amount listed. Skier - you said that there has to be at least one payable item - why can't I get it to work - is there a special process to go through?

Has this been figured out? We are trying to invoice the same kind of thing (free item if another non-free item is purchased), but have to put 0.01. Kind of corny to send out invoices like this when we've told the customer it's free...
thanks for any updates

Minimum is $.01, this behavior is by design and there are no features or options to change it.
