E-mail from PayPal every time I log in.

Why, whenever I login to PayPal, do I get an e-mail advising 'We noticed a new device login' when I only log in on my own desk-top computer?

Also, why does it show middlesbrough mdb uk? [A new device logged in to your PayPal account, xxxx@hotmail - middlesbrough mdb uk - date & time]

The latest response from  PayPal_JonK unfortunately does not 'shed any light' on this concern.

May I be clear that I live 100's of miles from the UK town of Middlesborough. I have never been to Middlesborough. I have not been close to Middlesborough for some 20+ years and nor have any of my devices and I strongly suspect the earlier contributors are similar.

The general Moderator responses are focussing on ISP and location of the recipients of this worrying PayPal email, perhaps understandably, but this is not this issue.

It is concerning to receive an email from PayPal stating a new device has logged into my account and that it states a location (Middlesborough) where this login allegedly occurred especially when I (and others) know they and/or their devices have been nowhere near that location.

Perhaps now, this may give some clarity about this query and hopefully someone (PayPal) could respond with a better answer and steps towards a permanent solution.

PS I'm sure Middlesborough is a very nice place !

Nicely put @Crazy-Mike

Just to help IT guys at PayPal locate the root cause….

Last night I got another notification email - this time stating the login location was ‘london lnd uk’.

I suspect that this location is actually the location of a server used in the transaction authentication/approval process somewhere between PayPal and our personal bank/building society.

In these instances the servers need to be excluded somehow - over to PayPal IT specialists.

yep, same here, middlesbrough mdb uk and device called a panther. I am nowhere near middlesbrough and my phone is not a panther. However, this is a new phone, and this the first time I have logged into PayPal using the new phone, and this has obviously unnerved PayPal's IT dept.

Come on PayPal, you need to sort this out please.

Having the same problem. Paypal is being negligent in not addressing it because it poses a real security issue in that given their explanation we will now ignore such messages which leaves the account open to attack. Sort it PayPal.

I have had the same problem booking a Gatwick parking slot using PayPal viz (middlesbrough mdb uk)

I note two answers to this...one PayPal will disagree with..

1) check the time of your transaction and that of the PayPal warning and you will see they are different by a couple of minutes (ie probably the PayPal process of checking validity.

2. STOP using PayPay as a payment facility and load your credit card onto your phone / computer. Ruduced transactions may spur the techies (if available) to sort the problem.

This is a new problem to me so what has changed in PayPals process???

I’ve had the same issues however even more worryingly the time of this login was 5.30am this morning yet the last time I was in PayPal was the evening before. Is this a security risk??

Sorry @MadMac44

I’m no expert but I would be regularly checking my PayPal account if I were you - this should give some piece of mind.

For sure, we don’t understand how PayPal’s transaction processes work so ideally they should be able to explain why the transaction was tagged with the 05:30 timestamp. Hopefully this forum’s moderators should pick up on this query.  Failing that, I recommend searching out a ‘Contact Us’ button to ask for direct & personal assistance.

Sorry I can’t be of any help

Firstly I Don't work for PayPal, I just felt sorry for them!
You need to speak to your internet service provider, it's simple your ISP is sending the wrong location for a number of reasons;

Why is my ISP location wrong?
If you notice an IP location is incorrect, this may be due to the internet provider (ISP) reporting incorrect location data. Another possible cause of this issue could come from users that are going through a proxy server that is being hosted in a different area than the user.

One factor to consider is your ISP - some ISPs route all their traffic to a fairly central location before it reaches the public internet. As such, regardless of where you are actually located, your internet traffic will appear to be coming from the location of the ISP's exit point.

Why am I Commenting on this? because I decided to G**gle my new location that PayPal has been fed! "london ind uk" when I'm in Wales.

Please don't shoot the messenger or the poor support staff! PayPal is doing what it needs to do to protect our interests, if anything, contact your ISP to complain and get them to do something about it.
Just saying...

Thanks for the insight @Ianspeed

The only time I get the messages is when I am asked by PayPal to confirm my online purchase by using the PayPal app (‘Are you trying to logon?’).

Although I’ve worked in IT for 38 years I don’t profess to be an Internet expert but if it is related to the ISP I suggest we all state which ISP we’re all using (unless anyone can think there’s a danger in such a disclosure?
If we can identify a common ISP then we may be able to use the power of the collective to get something done to resolve these scary messages?

My ISP is BT @Mogler @drkeithsnell @Joe_ninety

I have read all the messages buty I honestly do not think I have got a handle on the cause of this.  Nor do I understand or know if this is a security risk or not.  I also seem to be getting used to receiving them so I am starting to think they are not a security risk. The reason so many people are talking about this must be because they all thought it a security risk in the first place so looked it up.    Maybe I, along with many others, will ignore any future security risk emails (tongue in cheek here).    Bascially we are asking you - are you keeping us safe Paypal or not ?  TELL US PLEASE exactly what the situation is and why so many of us are getting these emails.
