Hello
Short story
My debit card was about to expire. 10 days before the expiration i received a new debit card from my bank delivered at home. My card came activated, i was ready to shop online. (like I did with amazon).
My new card has the same around number but different expiration day and ccv
What i did
- I tried to edit my debit card by changing the expiration date and ccv > PayPal didn’t accept the change
I tried to add another debit card (my new one) > PayPal was coming up with errors, "try again later" - I deleted the old card and then tried to add the new card with the same result > Try again later
- I tried different browser, cleared cache, cookies > same error.
I am managing different PayPal accounts for a few businesses and I never had come up with that kind of issue.
I am pretty sure that this problem comes from PayPal end-side but they are not reading my emails. The bots just autoreply.
I have contacted my bank > no issues there
I have been mading payments with this card from Amazon, local shops & ATMs > no issues there
What am i supposed to do?
I had already linked my bank account, so i pay from that.

A. How do I add / remove a card or change my card details?
You can use a Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit card to pay with PayPal.
Here’s how to add a card to your account:
- Go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.
- Click Wallet at the top of the page.
- Click Link a card.
- Enter the required information and click Save.
Note:
- Some merchants cannot accept American Express. Consider adding a backup card to your account.
- You can link up to 8 credit cards or debit cards to your PayPal account.
- The card you add must be in the same name as the PayPal account and issued in the country in which the account was opened.
Here’s how to change your card’s expiry date:
- Go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.
- Click Wallet near the top of the page.
- Click the card you want to change.
- Click Edit.
If you have any cards on PayPal that you are no longer using you can remove these cards.
Here’s how to remove a debit or credit card:
- Go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.
- Click Wallet at the top of the page.
- Under ‘Debit and credit cards', click the card you'd like to remove.
- Click Edit.
- Click Remove Card.
You cannot remove a card if the card was used for a pending transaction.
B. Where do I find the code to confirm my card?
You will find your 4-digit code on your card statement 2-3 working days after linking your card on your PayPal account. Your 4-digit PayPal code will show on your card statement next to a small PayPal charge.
Your card statement is a document provided by your credit card company, which shows a summary of your card payments for a set period of time. Some credit card companies send this monthly by post while others provide an online version. If you do not have online access to your statement, you can wait for your card company to send it by mail.
Please be advised that if you requested the PayPal code more than once you must use the last code to verify your account. Every time you request a new code the old code is deactivated for security reasons.
If the code you are trying to enter to confirm your card is identified as an old code, this means that you are not using the newest one.
Your code will look like this on your statement: PayPal*1234 CODE or PP*1234 CODE
When you know your code you can confirm your card:
- Go to the PayPal website and log in to your account.
- Click Wallet at the top of the page.
- Click the card that you're ready to confirm.
- Enter the 4-digit PayPal and click Confirm.
Note:
- The charge amount is refunded to your PayPal balance or your card, depending on your country, once the PayPal code is entered and your card is confirmed. This refund may take up to 24 hours to be reflected in your PayPal balance but will take longer if it is sent to your card.
- Please do not call your credit card company to get your PayPal code before receiving your monthly statement in the mail. Please be aware that if you are using a prepaid card, you should ensure it offers the statement service. Otherwise you will need to contact your card issuer's Customer Service to retrieve the 4 digit PayPal code. You can get the code quickly if you have online access to your debit or credit card statement. Keep in mind that it takes a few business days for the charge to appear.
- If you do not have online access to your card statement, please wait to receive your statement in the mail. Your 4-digit PayPal code is printed next to the word "PayPal" in the item description section of your statement.
- Please note that for security reasons we cannot provide you with the PayPal code by email or by phone.
C. How much will I be charged to confirm my card?
When you begin the process of linking and confirming your debit or credit card, PayPal will charge a small amount to your card.
These charges will be refunded to you once the PayPal code is entered and your card is confirmed. This may take up to 24 hours to appear in your PayPal balance. If you cannot receive payments into your PayPal account, your charge will be refunded directly to your card within a few working days.
If you requested the PayPal code more than once, then you will find more than one charge on your card statement. The full amount of all the charges will be refunded once you have entered your PayPal code and confirmed your card.
D. Why couldn't I complete my payment?
We regret the difficulty you have experienced when attempting to make a payment with your card. Often when you receive an error message saying your payment could not be completed, it is because your card issuer has denied the payment.
The only information that we receive is that your card provider has declined the use of this card with PayPal.
Here are some common reasons why a card issuer would decline a payment:
- There could be a limit on your credit card that has been exceeded.
- It's possible that the card issuer could be temporarily unavailable to answer the authorisation request we sent.
- Your credit card company could be blocking this transaction for security reasons as it doesn't fit your regular spending patterns.
I'd encourage you to contact your credit card issuer and speak to someone who deals with online transactions to find out why this payment was denied. The general customer service at your bank may not be able to provide specific information on why a transaction was denied. You will need to contact the department in charge of online payments to obtain this information.
You may be able to complete this payment after you have spoken to your card issuer and resolved the issue. Alternatively you can add another credit card to your PayPal account.
E. Can I have my card charged in a different currency?
When you add a credit or debit card to your PayPal account, it is automatically registered as denominated in your local currency. This is our standard procedure as your card issuer does not inform us what the actual currency is.
To update the currency we use to charge your credit card, please reply to this email with the following information:
- The last two digits of the credit card affected.
- The currency you want to use for your credit card.
Until we update the currency for your credit card, you should complete the following steps when you send a payment:
- Click 'Other Conversion Options' on the 'Review Your Payment' page.
- Choose 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice.' Select this option to ensure that your credit card is charged in the currency you want.
When you choose this option, you won't know which foreign exchange rate has been applied to the transaction until you receive your card statement. Your card issuer will determine the foreign exchange rate to apply to the transaction. You will not be informed of the foreign exchange rate or any additional foreign exchange fees until you receive your card statement as this information is only known by your card issuer.

Wow, looks like the "solution" is when some bot account clicked on the regurgitated message, which was copy-pasted from their useless help page. But apparently this is all PayPal calls "solved", huh? The original poster themselves even immediately said that none of that information helped. In fact, I would assume it was the very first thing the person tried. So apparently there is no solution, but PayPal has a system that any random account (possibly a bot account from PayPal itself), can call something a "solution" even if it helped literally nobody.
