Paypal gone bonkers, no way to use now!

I've used paypal for a decade now, and found it a safe, convenient and fast way to pay.

However over the last 3 months, it's all gone horribly wrong.

My account stopped working when my credit card expired, and adding my replacement one wouldn't work.  It kept saying "invalid number", even when it was perfect.  The reason given was that I live in Italy, and the card was from HSBC, "The World's Local Bank", so it wasn't going to work.

So I was told I have to create a new account, when I move to another country.... what a pain.  

So I did that, except now it's asking me to enter proof of address, and will only let me enter a UK address... which I don't have proof of.

So I am completely **bleep** on all sides.  All my standing orders and debits / subscriptions are failing, and there is nothing I can do.

I tried to call PayPal, however they are experiencing "Exceptionally Long Waiting Times", which I can verify after 9 hours in a queue....

I suppose the reason is that paypal doesn't work anymore, and there are a lot of very angry people on the phone to them.

Talk about "how to kill your business".... It's just a shame there's no real alternatives...

You have a UK paypal account and live in Italy and that is why it is not working.

Paypal is country specific so if you move countries you have to open another paypal account in the country you reside in and add an address / phone number / bank accounts / cards from within that country.

You should really withdraw any funds / resolve issues / remove cards and bank accounts before you move countries. If you don't then you may have problems doing so once you have moved and may need to contact customer services for help to resolve things.

However I have lots of services and things in the UK I need to pay for, I have a global bank which I can use in Italy, it costs money to have a bank account in Italy with an Italian bank, and HSBC had no problem to simply change my address to Italy.

I have tried to set up an Italian paypal account, however that doesn't work, it doesn't like the card number....
