I booked a trip a couple of months ago and had to cancel due to covid-19. Airbnb refunded my money through PayPal. PayPal instead of refunding me the money TOOK OUT MORE. I have tried to contact but no response. What can I do? It was over $1000. My bank is trying to help, but says all PayPal has to do is refund it!

Hi @AnnaG2,

All refunds will be sent back to the payment method of your original payment. Money should be refunded in the currency you originally selected. If we're unable to refund you in the original currency, or your primary currency, you'll be refunded in US dollars (USD).

For more info on refunds, look here:

https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/FAQ1212

If you don't have a PayPal Cash or a PayPal Cash Plus account, then your refund cannot be in your account balance.

To have a specific reply on where is the refund, you'll have to contact us.

Thanks,

Avi

Telling people to contact PayPal isn’t as helpful as it used to be considering ppl do so the only way left, via messages/chat, only to get an eternal revolving door of ‘our agent will be with you in about an hour’ or an few hours’ alternating between the two. At least that has been my experience.

Hi @ShadowRevan20

You've said in the original post that your "bank is trying to help, but says all PayPal has to do is refund it! "

Your refund will initially go back to the PayPal balance before being auto swept back to the original funding source (bank). It may take up to 5 business days for the refund amount to appear on your bank account.

Is it possible that you're still within the 5 business days and that's why you can't see the refund?

I know this isn't a conciliation, but you must remember what was the reason you've had to cancel this payment - the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have taken action as COVID-19 has spread, to protect the physical well-being and financial security of our employees so that they are in a position to care for their health while also supporting our customers. Many employees are now working remotely, and we will also be transitioning several of our customer service centers to this remote working structure. As these employees make the transition, we might see an impact on wait times for our phone or email service. During this time, you can find immediate answers to your questions on the PayPal Help Center. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this together. The commitments we have made to support and care for our employees will ensure that we are ready and equipped to also support our customers during these uncertain times.

Where can I find the refund status in my PayPal account?

From your PayPal app, you can view your refund status by tapping Your activity.

From your computer, here's how:

  1. Click Activity at the top of the page.
  2. Select your date range located to the left of the search bar.
  3. Click Filters and select Refunds.
  4. Click the refunded transaction to view the details.

Here are a few common refund statuses you may see:

  • Pending: The refund is still processing from the sender's payment method. It usually takes 3-5 business days from the date the refund was issued for it to be completed and credited back to the original form of payment.
  • Refunded or Partially Refunded: The refund is complete. The money has been credited to the original form of payment.
  • Temporary hold: The transaction was refunded before it has cleared your bank. It'll take 3-5 business days for the money to clear your bank, and then the refund will be credited to your bank account.

Thanks,

Avi
