Subscription renewal - unauthorised transaction

I have a subscription with an email provider, they hold me PayPal details so that they can renew my subscription on an yearly basis This year I determined to not renew my subscription, however, the provider has purposefully made it as difficult as possible to cancel a subscription I determined the easiest method would be to delete my payment details, to prevent automatic rebilling. However, when I attempted to remove my payment details I was not allowed to - company has confirmed that it’s not possible to have empty payment details However, the attempted act to remove my payment details is a clear removal of consent to use these payment details As you can probably guess, my renewal was still processed, and I was still charged I opened an “unauthorised transaction” dispute, but this was declined What gives? Do PayPal not abide by GDPR? For the sake of absolute clarity - I revoked my consent to store my personal data (payment details) yet the service provider kept them and used them anyway

You didn’t properly cancel the billing agreement or withdraw your authorization at PayPal.

You’ll find how to properly cancel a billing agreement or sub on this page:

https://www.paypal.com/uk/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-cancel-an-automatic-payment-i-have-with-a-merch...

You’ll also have to ask the merchant for a refund of what you just paid and cancel the service. If they refuse, open a chargeback through your card issuer as their terms may be more broader than PayPal buyer protection in regards to recurring payments/subscriptions at least.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

Unfortunately, you couldn’t be more wrong The billing agreement is under GDPR defined as personal data - the reason being it’s a unique identifier that allows the merchant to identify me with the use of the identifier and other information they hold about me As such, this is a GDPR personal data breach - I’ve made GDPR complaints both to PayPal and the merchant to get this rectified
