"Please link a credit or debit card to complete your purchase"

Hi,

I have recently created this Paypal account for the sole purpose of conducting online transactions. I went on eBay, tried to purchase a couple of items, and everytime I log in to paypal to process the payment, that annoying error message keeps popping up.

I have ALREADY linked a credit card on my account, and even after I re-entered the details for my card and press "Add" at the bottom, the page just reloads and the error message remains, as if nothing happened.

I'm really distraught over this and have no idea what to do. I have tried removing then re-adding my credit card on my paypal account, but that didn't do anything. I have also tried clearing my web cache to no avail. This error also pops up on EVERY device I use, regardless of the browser. 

Please help me fix this rather simple but extremely frustrating issue.

Is there a "Change" link above this so you can select your linked card?

Also try going Account Settings (wheel icon) > Payments 

And select the card as your preferred for your online purchases.

Thank you for your advice. After changing the preferred card for online shopping I no longer receive the "add a credit card" error on eBay again. I would have given your response as the solution but now I have a new problem.

A new error now keeps popping up. from eBay when I try to proceed with the checkout. It reads "Sorry, this payment option isn't available.", and I have absolutely no damn idea why this error keeps popping up.

This is so damn frustrating and I am nearly at wit's end. Just a simple transaction and eBay & paypal have to go ahead and make tons of problems for me. 

Any advice on this problem would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry for the necro but the original "add a debit/credit card" issue has resurfaced once again, and this time changing my preferred online payment method doesn't solve it. ?? 

Any help would be extremely appreciated!

I have the same problem - for the first time after about 500 ebay/paypal transactions.  I can find nothing wrong on my ebay, paypal or credit card accounts.  Next step is to shut everything down and try again later.

I tried several more time through the day - both to use paypal and to use the credit card option - without success.

After the last failed attempt I selected the same item from another seller (at a slightly higher price) - worked immediately with a PayPal payment!  Possibly the seller had realised the price was too low, so withdrew the item from sale (but ad not yet deleted by ebay) which caused an error that was badly handled by the ebay server.
