Receiving money with a PayPal personal account in Malaysia

Hello there!

I have a question about receiving money with a personal account in Malaysia. When I looked at the website of PayPal Malaysia, there's a section for "getting paid for your sales" but I didn't find receiving a personal payment, such as receiving money from your friend/family.

Is it not possible to receive money with a personal account in Malaysia? Do you need a business account to receive?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @itewonite ,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Yes, you can receive personal payments or what we call payment to a friend/family and you do not need to have a Paypal Business Account. If you send money requests to friends or family members, it would automatically show as a seller payment or payment for goods/services.

You can check this link to know more about receiving payments in Malaysia.

https://www.paypal.com/my/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-receive-payments-using-paypal-faq1664?app=searc...

If you have a personal or business Paypal account, you would always be asked if the payment you are sending is a payment to a friend/family or payment for an item/service.

Hope this helps! Stay safe.

 thank you for your reply!
So does that mean if I receive a payment from a friend/family, it will cost a fee to receive, just like a business account receiving payment for a service/goods?
Thank you in advance! Have a good day:)

If it from a family/friend there wont be any fees except conversion fees in case. @itewonite

That fee is only applicable when they have sent it as a payment for an item/service. Upon sending money, it will actually ask you if it is a payment to a family/friend or for goods/services.

You can check with us anytime.. Also, you may reach live representatives through chat through Contact Us, usually located on the very bottom of the page. Stay home and safe.

@Mejoare

Have paypal re-started allowing paypal account holders in Malaysia to send/receive friends/family payments then?

Only they stopped them in 2013?

@kernowlass , Yes it shows that Malaysian accounts are again able to receive personal payments (friends/family).  So you can send personal payments again. 🙂

Hi, how come a fee was charged with a friend sent me a fund? The transfer was made in RM. There's no options to family and friend or for payment when making a transfer via the app or Web page.

Hello @Bec91v,

Whether you pay a fee on a transaction received or not depends on how the sender has sent the payment. Also, depending on what currency the transaction is sent and received in, there may be a currency conversion fee. You can read more about our fees here: PayPal Fees.

Hope that helps,

Hi @PayPal_JonK ,

The transaction is both sent and received in Ringgit Malaysia (RM) domestically.

In the first transfer using Paypal balance, RM2.95 was deducted from the RM20 transferred.

In the second transfer using card, RM2.41 was deducted from the RM7 transferred.

PayPal Fees. mentioned no fee for Paypal balance and for cards, it is 2.90% + fixed fee

Seem like i was charged more than that.

Thanks for the reply @Bec91v,

It sounds like it's a possibility that the sender sent the payments as "goods and services," payments rather than "friends and family," payments. There would not be a fee to receive domestic "friends and family," payments in Malaysia. I recommend asking the sender to review their sent payments to determine how it was sent. You can find all of the fees for receiving domestic goods and services payments by country here

I hope that answers your question,

-Megan S.
