Hi all, I am overseas but use USD in my account. A trusted friend sent a payment in USD but didn't stipulate I receive USD so it converted to my local currency. Then PayPal converted that to USD and double dipping on the conversion (USD to AUD, then my balance from AUD to USD). The amount was 340 USD paid in family and friends but only 314 appeared in my account.
I've issued a refund but will they receive the full 340 USD or just the converted amount?
I've asked them to pay again but this time make sure the recipient receives the full 340 USD before we proceed. They are in a different time zone & haven't seen the refund yet.

Please read how to use multiple currencies with PayPal:
https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full?locale.x=en_AU#multiple-currencies
If you accept USD, then you must have a USD currency balance for the USD to go in. To add one, go to Wallet, click Balance, click + Add a Currency, select USD.
The sender has to select USD as the currency next to the amount when sending friends and family payment. Then you should receive the $340 in the USD balance.
When you withdrawal, PayPal always convert the foreign currency to your local currency except if you link a US bank account, then you can withdrawal in USD. A local bank account in USD will not work. There will be double conversion.
"I've issued a refund but will they receive the full 340 USD or just the converted amount?"
If PayPal performed currency conversion for your transaction and a refund is issued:
- Within 1 days of the date of the original payment, PayPal’s transaction exchange rate (including a currency conversion spread) used at the time of the original payment will apply.
- Beyond 1 days of the date of the original payment, PayPal’s transaction exchange rate (including a currency conversion spread) on the date of the refund will apply.
Money will be refunded in the currency you paid; or if we are unable to refund in the currency you paid, in your primary holding currency; or we are unable to refund in your primary holding currency, then in U.S. dollars.
If the money was declined (instead of refunded), any fees the sender was charged to send the money will also be refunded.
Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
