As above, I put an AliEx payment through PayPal pay-in-3, no problem at PayPal's end, but going through AliEx's checkout the payment is 'declined'. I discover from reading up on the subject that this is apparently a known bug with AliEx's payment system. The AliEx orders page says this is now 'awaiting payment', while here at Paypal the payment is described as 'pending'.
Do I just go through the AliEx checkout again? Or does that mean I'm going to end up paying for this thing twice?
UPDATE: I have cancelled the transaction, it appears that the seller has blocked me from purchasing from them after a dispute - where I was totally in the right - resulted in them having to refund me one time. Nice of AliEx to let me go through checkout without alerting me to that fact.
So, my question is now amended: will the 'pending' pay-in-3 simply lapse now, or do I have to notify someone that the order was cancelled?

I am sorry to hear about your negative experience when trying to make your purchase. I know this must be frustrating.
When you attempt to make a payment, the amount can be temporarily charged to your bank/card. This is an authorization charge.
As the merchant has declined your order, the order will not be completed. Therefore, the temporary charge will be removed from your bank within 72 hours. It can take up to 30 days for the Pending authorization in your PayPal account to show as Cancelled.
