The triangle shaped card reader was used in conjunction with PayPal Here. Customers who were previously approved for PayPal Here may continue using the application and the card reader they have, although I believe the triangle shaped one is out of date entirely and was replaced with a better reader some time ago.
If you never applied for and received approval for PayPal Here, it won't be possible to do that now since PayPal Zettle was introduced recently as our Point of Sale (POS) payment solution for merchants/sellers who want to accept credit and debit cards in person.
You have probably seen the webpage for PayPal Zettle, based on what you mentioned about looking up the triangle card reader and seeing different answers.
