Paypal debit card declined on Amazon

I just purchased all my Christmas gifts for my whole family on Amazon using my PayPal debit card and it didn't go through . It's pending and Amazon is asking me to verify payment yet when I look at my transaction history on Paypal the money is gone. I contacted customer service and it's been 2 days and the representatives keep telling me to keep trying. I'm confused. If the payment was declined why is the money no longer in my account and neither in Amazon's hands. Time is running out for Amazon to deliver my order on time for Christmas. I'm away from family and really wanted to make them happy. I can't transfert the funds to another account to re-order on amazon with another card because PayPal is holding the money. I really need help understanding this.
