Why Can No Longer Get a PayPal Key?

For months I’ve been successfully using PayPal keys to buy things online using the virtual MasterCard number associated with my PayPal key.  Occasionally I would delete the key after using it with a merchant that I don’t trust and then apply for a new one.  This always worked before, but after the last time that I deleted the key the option to get a new one disappeared from my account and when I use the direct link to sign up for a PayPal key that is in the “Help” section I get a message saying that the feature is “coming soon”.  I’ve done all the “wild goose chase” things that PayPal support will usually say to do when a problem arises – clear the cache, try logging on from other devices, use a VPN, don’t use a VPN, etc.  but not dice.  Is this a known issue, and is there any way that I can restore this feature?

If the PP Debit card pulled money from your credit card when you have a zero balance in your PP account the way that a PayPal Key did then it might be an adequate replacement.  But, if I understand it correctly, the PP Debit card only works if you have a cash balance in your PP account sufficient to cover the purchase.

Thanks Kelvin!

That would be too hard for me to manage.

Some of the Citi Bank CCs have the virtual acct. feature I'll be heading over there ...

PP's policy update page confirms the removal of the PP key product.  see:

"

Amendments to the PayPal Key Terms and Conditions
Effective: June 17, 2022, we are:

  • Removing any PayPal Key references that are no longer applicable, including retiring the agreement, because we have discontinued the PayPal Key feature.

Just cancelled a purchase because the PP Key is no longer available. I do NOT need another credit/debit card.

The good news, I'll no longer be using PayPal Credit. I really shouldn't be buying on credit anyway.  I'll just put off my purchase until I actually have the funds.  Then I won't have to use PayPal for pretty much anything.

I guess this is what they want us to do.

The MAIN reason I use PayPal Key is to "mask" my real CC and Debit card.

I think PayPal just wants us all to have "their" debit / credit cards.

I am gonna publicize this and let PayPal know how upset I am that they are discontinuing the PayPal Key.

Absolutely ludicrous of them to do so.

And "of course" the e-mail won't tell you the REASON for the discontinuation.

I also am a PayPal user of over 10 years;;   not a good way to keep and maintain your "core" customers

   and users!

THE MAIN REASON I USE PAY PAL IS TO LINK TO MY PHYSICAL ACCOUNTS and not have to keep

entering all my financial info each and every time that I purchase something.

I hope this forum tells PayPal  how disappointed we are.

Just my humble venting and opinion.

Thanks!

I agree Miss...

That's the same reason I use my Virtual Card for some things, and not for others.

I've been with PP for about half as long as you, and the VPP (as I call it) was an awesome feature !

But as someone else here mentioned, there are other DCard issuers that DO have a virtual card.

And I especially enjoy AmEx and the ability to create Goal sub-accounts and move money around for budgeting, yet another reason why the VPP came in handy as I could know at a glance by which account it was, the KeyCard or the HardCard # the general purpose of the purchase.

Personally, I would like to see the KeyCard Stay!    And I was looking forward to the "Savings" feature (IF it ever happens), and it would be nice to be able to set aside portions of  the PP Balance to sub-accounts ('Envelopes') that are NOT publicly accessible for purposes of budgeting...

Thanks or your comment!

I'm sure there are MANY thinking the same thing...

My solution has been to get an Apple Credit card.

The wallet feature is great and I can rotate to a new virtual card number instantly.

I should have done this years ago it is superior.

Thanks for the motivation PayPal!
