If you funded the original paypal payment to the seller with a debit or credit card then it won't go back to your paypal balance.
Once refunded and marked as completed it will automatically go back to your bank account or credit card but takes up to a week to process through to the bank and a bit longer for a c.c.

Hi Thanks for replying,
my paypal account is registerde with a visa debit card , is this what you mean by funded with a debit card?
If so, yes as I dont have any funds in my paypal account.
I've checked the transaction again and it shows temprarily on hold by paypal, status placed? what does this mean?
Basically i orderd the item, sent it back for a refund which the supplier has processed as shown on my paypal account, the money has been debited from my bank account and await refund to my bank.
maybe i'm being impatient and worrying for nothing but would like to know why it's on hold and if there is a problem but cant speak to anyone at paypal which is a tad annoying!
Thanks
Aggy

When you said you had received the refund i presumed it stated completed in your paypal account transaction history.
But now you say its on temporary hold which is a completely different thing. >>>>
When you send a bank funded Instant Transfer payment, two things happen simultaneously:
- PayPal sends a request to your bank for the funds for the transaction. It takes 3-7 business days for funds to come from your bank.
- PayPal pays the seller up front for you, instantly, so that the seller will not delay in processing your order.
When refund or cancellation occurs for that payment within a few days of it being sent, the funds that PayPal paid up front for you are returned.
However, the funds from your bank account are still in transit. They haven't reached your PayPal account yet.
As soon as those funds clear, they are available for you to use or withdraw.

This is what it shows on the activity list:
1) 7th April..........Refunded from......supplier..........completed
2) 31st Mar..........purchase from........supplier.........refunded.......
7th April..........Temp hold by..........paypal...........placed.........
7th April...........refund from.............supplier.........completed
31st Mar...........transfer from..........bank account........completed
i'm confused!!
So paypal requested funds from bank on the 31st, the money came out of my bank account on the 7th (yesterday) supplier also refunded paypal yesterday (showing +sumrefunded) so all that remains is for paypal to pay back into either my account direct (which I assumed would happen as it's a debit/visa card transaction) ??

The funds left/completed from your bank account on the 31st march, but it takes about 5-7 days to transfer to paypal and we have had bank holidays in between, when the hold is released it means the funds have arrived at paypal.

So if the refund is COMPLETED, where is the money?? If it is completed then it should be in the bank ready to be used yes? So why is it in limbo? I'm in the same boat except waiting an extra 2 days..

If it is completed it means the refund has completed and passed on to your funding source.
Then it takes a few days to hit that funding source.
As paypal cannot possibly know when it hits your funding source as differing debit / credit cards have differing clearance times then it is marked as completed when they have done their part.
