Advice about selling a car, recieving payment via paypal.

I'm selling my car (not on ebay) and have had someone offering to buy via paypal and send someone for collection. I know all about these scams where buyers say I'll pay with a bankers draft and add shipping fees and the seller has to sort it out with the shippers. I've always disregarded these and said cash on collection only but this one says he'll pay in full via paypal and arrange for someone to collect. I just want to know where I stand on the security of the payment. Do I have to wait any particular time for it to clear? Can he cancel payment once cleared or request a refund?

You hear so many scams going on I just want to be sure, I'm already dubious due to the fact he's saying he'll send someone else to collect. Or am I just best sticking to my guns and demanding cash on collection? Please help.

WEll Well... I just had same email from David <removed> for my car on Vivastreet... might string him along a bit.

"Thanks for the email, do let me know how much you are willing to sell
to me  and you need to assure that it is in perfect condition and i
would love to see any pictures if you have. I will be paying with my
paypal account which is the safest online payment mode. So please do
reply me asap with your paypal account or send me a payment request
from your paypal account so i can effect payment to you rightaway. You
can easily open an account with paypal if you don't have one at
www.paypal.co.uk. its safe, simple and reliable also do get back to me
so we can arrange for pick up as i will like it to be picked by my
pick up agent, so no shipping included. I await your reply. Hope to
hear from you soon."

Had something of this nature a few weeks ago.... is there a way of "scamming the scammer" as it were and closing the paypal account once the funds are on there?

come down myself for the inspects and make the transaction done in
person but due to the nature of my work i will not be able to do so
because I'm a United State NAVY, Shipping and picking up would be on
me because i will arrange for the Shipping Company/Mover agent for
picking up at your residence after the payment might been cleared,
Mover agent will come for the pick up after the payment have been made
through PayPal, and he will do all the necessary things on my behalf
when he comes for the pick up, i want you to be honest with sincerity
with this transaction, if there is anything else to do kindly let the
Mover agent know before left your place. I will be paying you with my
PayPal Account because it's safe and very secure way to make payment
online. If my mode of payment is accepted so kindly get back to me
with your PayPal account email address so that i can proceed with the
payment as soon as possible.

I am so glad I looked on here! I've had my car advertised on several websites and just received this ... Thanks for the prompt response.I'm Okay with the condition of the Car as i have already go through it on the ad but just trying to make little inquiry from you ready to buy it now for my Daughter, I'm at sea at the moment as I'm a Navy Officer,and due to the nature of my Job.....phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you a Text regarding it. I really want it to be a surprise for my Daughter i won't let her know anything about it until it gets delivered to her, i am sure she will be more than happy with it. I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it,Get back to me with your PayPal email and the price so i can proceed with the payment quickly, and sorry if you don't have an Account, you sign-up for a PayPal personal account www.paypal.com it is very fast and easy to set up. And there is a shipping company pick up agent that will come for the pick up after the payment has been sorted out. Thanks

I have received an email today from John Tattham, seems this guys never gives up, it says exactly the same about happy with the condition of the car etc and will pay by paypal and get someone from their shipping to collect it, I hate it when stuff like this happens but I suppose thats the world we live, I have replied basically selling I have never met anyone who has bought a car and never been to see it!!!! oh well....by the way I have a car for sale, a toyota avensis in  Doncaster hehehe

I've just had a very similar email selling my car on AutoTrader - some bits almost word for word;

"Hi,
Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy the car now as a birthday gift for my brother in-law. I am at sea at the moment as I am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone call making and visiting of websites are restricted but I just had to squeeze out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise package for brother in-law so I won't let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him, I am sure he will be more than happy with the car. I insist on PayPal as my mode of payment because I don't have access to my bank account online and also, I don't have internet banking, but I can pay from my PayPal account. I have my bank account attached to my PayPal account, so I will need you to send me a Paypal money request for the final price of the car so I can make the payments asap for it and please if you don't have a PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and set it up, after you have set it up I will only need you to send me a Paypal money request so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after I have made the payment for the car.

I would have loved to call but unfortunately, I wouldn't be allowed to do so due to the nature of my profession as I'm serving in US army and I've been currently deploy to Eastern Mediterranean off Syria's coastline on war front and calls are restricted at the moment, So calls are not allowed as security measures. I had a guy email who saw my ad on carsales.com who wants to buy my car today. It sounds a little dodgy because he claims he can only pay through paypal - anyway I insisted that he calls me first so he is going to call me in 20min, but then I came to this site to check out if anyone has had any strange dealings with someone only wanting to pay with paypal. Anyway, this is what he wrote in response to my advert via email which sounds a bit dodgy but I'll have to wait and see what he says:

A co-worker of mine has this type of vehicle and I am genuinely

obsessed with his vehicle, I have always wanted to take his vehicle

for a ride which is why I decided to buy one for myself, I would have

loved to come for an inspection of the vehicle but I am working in

Bass Strait presently,   I’ve been working on the CSG projects in

central Qld - living in the drilling camp etc.

I am willing to buy the vehicle at your requested price and arrange

the pick-up of the vehicle with a Private Courier Service, I do not

have internet banking but my Bank account is linked with my paypal

account so I am able to send payment to your PayPal account directly

and I will pay the paypal fees too, I had used them a couple times on

eBay and they seem quite secure, in order for me to secure the payment
