Hi @Mike40404,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the PayPal Community Forum! I'm sorry to hear that you've received instructions like that from someone pretending to be PayPal!
It sounds very much like you may have received a fraudulent invoice. The notes on that invoice likely contained instructions to contact "Customer Service" to dispute a payment. If you called that number, you would then be speaking to a fraudster. This is not a hack of the PayPal app. Your PayPal account would still be secure because all the fraudster knew was your email address. This is, however, a way for a fraudster to use the ability to send an invoice as a way to scare people into thinking that they have to call them, and that is where they will attempt to phish for more information.
To learn more about the fraud invoice scam, please take a look at this linked post and the article linked therein.
You can ensure that your account is as safe as possible with the information in this PayPal page. If you downloaded any software, I would suggest a virus scan as soon as possible and then change your PayPal password (again, if necessary) after cleanup if malware is detected.
I hope this helps!
Olivia

Hello @hgrant510,
Welcome to the PayPal Community! I'm glad you reached out regarding this concern. PayPal does not use any kind of team-viewer or application to take control and verify our user's accounts. We do not recommend every allowing someone access to your password information or to view your PayPal account.
If your login credentials have been compromised or you allowed them control of your system, we would first recommend changing your password and login credentials. You may also want to check your Activity for any unrecognized activity. From there, you may want to run an anti-virus and malware scan on your system.
Putting a fraud alert on your credit record with one of the three major Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs) Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion may be a good idea as well just in case someone gained access to your personal data through your laptop. Although each CRA is a separate entity, you only have to contact one of the CRAs and they will automatically notify the other two.
If you still need assistance verifying your account, here's a Help Center article to guide you through that process: How do I verify my PayPal account?
Good luck and best wishes with everything,
- Jon K
