Has anyone been scammed by fake tracking numbers?

I assume most people are familiar with the fake tracking number scam.  You order an expensive item, the seller enters a tracking number which appears to be delivered, but your package does not arrive.  You are out of luck because the tracking says "delivered."  A seller attempted this with me but I prevailed since the weight was way off.  Instead of a $50 item I received a light switch from Home Depot, drop shipped free shipping which had a value of about $1.

Now, I am receiving additional small items from Home Depot to a mangled address, with my name on it, which I did not order.  These two packages represent two people who were also scammed with the fake tracking number scam.  I do not know how to reach out to those fraud victims.  The return addresses appear to fake.

Is anyone looking for a package with tracking number[Removed. Phone #s not permitted]2 2140 86 ?  If so, you got scammed and the seller sent an inexpensive item to me instead, just to show a "delivered" status with the tracking number.  If I can help those victims in any other way please reach out.

Thank-you,

Henry

Hello @hbutz,

Welcome to PayPal Community Forum and thank you for posting!

I understand you are concerned about a recent order and I know this can be a concerning situation. I hope to provide guidance. PayPal aims to protect you on all eligible purchases, if the item ordered does not arrive or you receive something significantly different, you will have to report the transaction through the Resolution Center. This is completed via our dispute process. Once you file a case, our concerned team will review it and get back to you with the results. I would suggest you keep an eye on both your email inbox and Resolution Center.

Best Wishes,

Ayesha

Happened to me with CROOK Ebay seller, I ordered a welder (10x15x22, 26 lbs), FAKED a Fedex delivery (5x6x9, 1 lb) -- shipping address was NOT my home-address. Plus, it was signed for by TTALIN -- I made no signature. I checked my surveillance video, no Fedex truck (10:55am, March 9)

Fedex told me via phone, the shipping address was NOT my home-address. I tried MULTIPLE times to get Ebay to handle it, all denied due to the (faked) Fedex delivery receipt. I appealed, where I included the Fedex receipt (1 lb package). Ebay even stated

shipped on March 10, delivered on March 9 [ makes NO SENSE!! ]

Appeal got DENIED! My next step was going to Paypal, my case was IMMEDIATELY declined. Again, the (faked) Fedex receipt was the cause. I then went to my bank (checking acct linked to Paypal), they wouldn't help me. I ended up at Ebay community, & another user reported a FAKED delivery (via USPS) -- out $912 !! I posted on the thread:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Returns/Item-was-not-delivered-eBay-refuses-to-refund/td-p/33667820

Someone in above thread told me to contact Ebay (over Facebook). I sent all the paper-trail (faked Fedex receipt, confused Ebay ship/delivery times, etc). They told me since I went to Paypal, they couldn't do anything!! However, it was their FAULT -- my initial appeal has all the evidence of FAKED Fedex delivery!! Finally, I submitted claim to Fedex, they DENIED IT! I told them, it's very simple:

"Issue me a refund. They have contact with the crook -- name/address/phone. Have their legal dept go after them"

I went thru 2 supervisors, etc. Just futile

This whole thing sounds like all these parties (my bank, Paypal, Ebay, Fedex) are just "passing the buck", not taking responsibility

GET THIS:
The crooked Ebay seller is STILL active, there are THREE other buyers who got RIPPED OFF. One had a FAKED UPS delivery, Ebay won't help

Here are 3 other buyers from the crooked Ebay seller ([Removed]), one of which had a FAKED USPS packageScreenshot 2023-04-06 003050.png

It appears Ebay has *doctored* their paper-trail from

shipped on March 10, delivered on March 9 [ makes NO SENSE!! ]

to

shipped on March 10, delivered on March 10

I assume, based on my appeal (which shows MESSED UP ship/delivery)

You have a crook basically making (Ebay, Paypal, Fedex, Wells Fargo bank) into IDIOTS!!

This can easily erupt on MSM (mainstream Media) as a SCANDAL, all the above parties look like S**T. Ebay stock is not doing well, it will further drive it down

Thank-you for sharing your situation.  I can see from other tone deaf responses directing people to use the "Resolution Center" that PayPal has not yet addressed the massive hole in their system which allows buyers to continue to be scammed.  To reiterate:

1) Buyer pays for an item with PayPal e.g. they order a CD Player for $100.

2) Seller drop ships an inexpensive item with free shipping from Home Depot to a bogus address e.g. a 97 cent light switch.

3) Buyer files a claim with the "Resolution Center" as item not received.

4) Seller provides a tracking number which says the "item" was "delivered."

5) PayPal closes the case, no appeal while the seller receives full payment for $100 sans 97 cents for the delivered item.

I just received a third item from one of these scammers - two cans of spray paint.  I have a growing pile of cheap items with a fake return address, delivered to ME so the seller can use the tracking number to scam someone else.  I do not want to be a party to this.  I do not want MY name used to scam others.  Each of these items which I receive with a Priority Mail tracking number represents someone who has been victimized by a broken "Resolution Center."

I think that PayPal is running on autopilot.

UNBELIEVABLE, Paypal sent me a refund!!

Just follow what I did -- goto Paypal (chat) & start a conversation. Explain the FAKED delivery thing, they will be helpful. Should give you a phone # to call

They want PROOF that

shipping-address is NOT home-address

In my case, Fedex would only do this ORALLY over the phone..they wouldn't send me an email. So, Paypal called them to confirm
