I have major trouble getting my money back from Aliexpress.com, a seller miss sold a lithium battery, grossly over stating it's power, they are asking me to return it at my cost, I have opened a dispute with Paypal, but they seem to be siding with the seller and have simply asked me to show proof of return, ie at my expense, to me this seems grossly unfair

I have now achieved my goal, full refund from Alipay, did not return the lithium battery, not because I didn't want to, but simply that I could not lawfully send a lithium battery through the post, Paypal asked me to send proof of this problem, which I did, and the money is now back in my account. Alipay is one company that I will avoid in the future because it appears to protect rogue sellers

In the event of a dispute you choose your seller and not Paypal so you need to bear in mind possible return trackable costs before you go ahead and buy from that seller / country.
Paypal state this >>
IMPORTANT: You may be required to return the item to the seller or other party we specify as part of the settlement of your claim. PayPal Buyer Protection does not entitle you to reimbursement for the return shipping costs that you may incur.
Although they will compensate you for some of the cost if you have already activated this at some point before you made that transaction.

You also have the option to do a chargeback via your card issuer instead of a Paypal dispute if you funded your Paypal payment via a credit card.

Kudos / Solution appreciated.

I fully understand what you are saying, but in this instance, the product was grossly miss sold to the point of total deceit and the cost of returning a battery will be significantly high, I simply cannot understand why I am supposed to be bearing the cost of return when the supplier is clearly in the wrong

Because that is how buyer protection works, if you got out of having to return an item by just ''saying'' it was mis-sold then every buyer would do so to get out of paying return costs.
Paypal clearly states they will refund you on return of goods back to the seller. If the seller is in the UK as well then you have the option of the small claims court if they refuse return postage costs.
