Paypal denied my unauthorised transaction claim for transactions from a hacked Wargaming account

Hey there all, I am looking for help in this matter.

I was alerted on the 1st of August to several charges being made through my paypal to an online game I used to play run by Wargaming. Now I have not played this game in a couple years so I was immediately aware that someone had gained access to my account and was using the linked Paypal account to make purchases. I logged into this account and reset the password immediately and filed a ticket both with the company that this relates to, and an unauthorized transaction ticket with Paypal.

I thought this would be a fairly obvious case of unauthorized use, as the last transaction made through this gaming service was at least several years prior, and all the transactions were made in a very tight one hour window on the service and in an amount I had never spent on the game.

However this unauthorized transaction dispute was denied not five hours after the fact with no explanation as to why they think this is an authorized transaction.

What is my next port of redress in this matter? Am I going to have to inform my bank to charge back all of these purchases or deny payment to Paypal? Can anyone advise what would be a wise next step in this matter, as I feel as though I have been somewhat cut loose by Paypal without any help at all. I see several people have also had the same problem, so it seems to be a large scale security breech. I don't want to have to take actions through my bank to cancel these charges, but I am being left with few options.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be given. [Reposted as I originally posted it in the wrong board]

This has happened to me on 31st July 2022. The exact same situation drained my entire account of £140 and then attempted on my debit card but my bank cancelled the card and blocked wargaming to ever use it. I disputed with paypal and they closed it instantly saying that it wasn't unauthorized and it obviously is. I tried to contact wargaming but their support system is extremely awful and I can't get them. Please let me know if you have any progress as it stands I need paypal for my streaming but I will never have more than 50 pounds in there after this. Completely insane. 6 different charges by the way

Karlim, so as not to leave you hanging.

I have woken up this morning and found that Wargaming have kindly resolved my ticket and refunded all the purchases made on my account (though I will hold my breath until I see it all back in my account). No additional proof needed from my side, so I have to presume they have had a data breech and are handling the cases all speedily due to the blatant fraudulent access. I would advise you pursue the matter a little harder with Wargaming, as this seems to have been the best recourse for me and their customer service was far beyond my expectations (given other people's reports about the quality of said service.)

I hope this gives you some help yourself. Good luck out there.

This happened to me today and Paypal closed the file, stating it was authorized, within an hour or so.

It concerns me that the data breach is within Paypal, as it is with two separate companies, one I have used for years (and within the last 4 months), the other I have used once 4 years ago.  It is too strange and the ticket with Paypal is considered resolved and closed.

I changed my password in May and again, twice, today.

I am in the same boat as you guys. This may be a dumb question but how were you actually able to contact wargaming customer support? I couldn't even figure out how any contact info to get through to them, even filed a ticket but kept getting an error.

I know this is a month old but I was similarly charged two separate times yesterday by Wargaming, totalling over $170. Just like OP, I filed a fraud charge ticket, and in a few hours PayPal responded that after reviewing my payment history with WG, that it was pre-authorized or some such nonsense, and they'll not refund the charges... PayPal then said it will remove WG from my linked/authorized accounts for preventing this in the future...BUT not refund the money because apparently they think the charges are valid. Very frustrated. I too, haven't played World of tanks etc., in a couple years, so I did not have anything to do with this activity. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a transaction history list or page on Wargaming's own website whatsoever, and also found their support page and options to be confounding and lacking. There was no option addressing purchases or similar complaints, but only for individual games or login issues. I randomly picked 'login issues' and then wrote the problem in the ticket. I'm hoping someone (human) will review it and respond.)
