Hello @Jackiehatton,
Welcome to the PayPal Community!
I can completely understand the concern caused when you're automatically signed into your account, especially when you were directed there from an email. It sounds like you might have PayPal One Touch enabled. One Touch allows you to sign into the account on trusted devices automatically. You can learn more about One Touch and how to disable it on our Help Center here: What is One Touch and how do I use it?
When reviewing emails, to be on the safe side, I don't recommend clicking on any links. If you received a phishing email, the link could take you to a fake website that tries to record your password. Since you didn't have to type in your password and you were in the process of making a payment, I don't believe this was a phishing attempt, though. However, to be on the safe side, I would recommend resetting your password and security questions. If you'd like to add a second layer of security to your PayPal account, you can set up 2-Step Verification.
I hope this information helps to ease your mind. If you made a purchase for an item/service and need any assistance with the payment, you may also qualify to file a dispute under PayPal's Purchase Protection Policy.
