I have an open dispute and the seller wants me to cancel it to issue a refund. Thoughts?

I opened a dispute with a seller because the product I received did not match the description.  I am requesting a full refund.  The seller is offering a lower amount.  Since the shipping cost for returning the product would be more than what I'm due, I decided to accept their offer.

However, now the seller wants me to close the dispute before giving me the refund.  This seems wrong to me, since closing the dispute takes it off their record and they essentially get away with the deception.

Is this common?  Should I close the dispute?

If you had to close a case to get a refund then it would be pointless opening one.
NEVER close a dispute / claim until you have a refund.
If the seller issued a refund then that would close the dispute automatically.
If he doesn't escalate to a claim.
Do not close it or he can ignore you and you can't open a second dispute OR re-open a closed one.

I have a dispute open against a seller whereby i paid fully and item expected did not come! After some time He has sent back partial refund in two installments removing “paypal” charges. And wants me to close my dispute. The dispute autocloses before the refund os off hold and into my account. Want to know if the dispute autocloses before being escalated will i still get that partial refund that is on hold till after the autoclosure or even that can be retracted by the seller? He keeps asking me to close the dispute- so im worried if i close the dispute he can cancel the refund on his end as its on hold. And also do i need to escalate the case in order to get that refund or do i leave things as they are and let it autoclose and then wait those extra two days for the refund to be off hold and into my acc?

I don't know the answer to your specifics.  But, I would recommend sending a copy of the seller's communications to PayPal.  When you open your dispute page, there is a box to submit further information.  It worked for me!

When i open up my dispute case file- that link of option to share any extra info to paypal doesnt come up anymore where i want to share a screenshot of the seller contacting me elsewhere constantly to close the dispute. The refund he has sent back is partial and is on hold- it is not in my account yet! Can the seller still stop the refund if i close the dispute? And my other main question is that the money os expected to be off hold after the date of the original dispute date closure- if the dispute is closed at that end date will it still affect the money that is on hold? And why is that link of share any extra info to paypal not showing up anymore- is it because he has sent partial refund eventho its on hold?

Thanks!  That was my gut reaction to the seller's request.

I am happy to report success in getting a full refund!

I took a screenshot of the seller's email asking me to close the dispute, and sent that to PayPal as additional information on the dispute page.

I think that helped.

Thanks PayPal!
