Looking to understand if this is legit. A relative of mine recieved a LETTER (not an email like others have) from Jefferson Capital seeking collection of debt. This relative no longer has access to their account and it has been months maybe years that they were last logged in. This letter detailing their supposed debt is a surprise and we do not know if it is a scam or legit. Does anyone have any insight on how we can confirm if it is or not on paypal's end knowing we dont have access to that account? Also, if you too had to deal with a debt letter from Jefferson any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thank you for the information. Like others on here, I recently received one of these letters from Jefferson Capital about a balance that is non-existent in my Paypal account. When I called Jefferson Capital they gave me the email that is associated with the debt and it is not mine. I have tried to contact Paypal directly to dispute this, but have been unsuccessful in doing so. Is there any advice or direction you can give to help with this?
Thank you in advance!

I have 3 words for you: CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. THESE CHARGES ARE BOGUS, DO NOT PAY. If you call them, they will admit #1) they have not notified any credit reporting agency about you, and #2) they do not have your social security number. They are trying to get STUPID people to pay fraudulent charges. We need to start a Class Action Lawsuit. I know people toss that term around, but this is for real. These notices are truly fraudulent, and I personally believe PayPal is also involved. Go ahead and call the number on the notice you receive. Ask them what the email address is for the PAY PAL ACCOUNT they claim owes money. They will read off a totally fake email address to you, and you'll then know how fake all this is.
DO NOT GET SCAMMED BY PAY PAL and JEFFERSON CAPITAL !!!!!!!

It must be a scam, my letter says the balance due is $2,651.44 and is offering to settle for $1,988.58 but my Paypal account does not reflect any problems or this kind of negative balance and is active so I don't understand how they can claim I owe that money when I don't have any issues.

I just talked to an agent from Jefferson. I told them I checked my "amount owing" status twice with PayPal Support and I'd like to have some details on why they believe I owe them money. The agent began by quoting some email address that I don't recognize, then my old mailing address. The agent said she'd log the information and investigate. What I wish to do is see if there is indeed another PayPal account under my name and its details. How can I search for PayPal accounts with my name attached?

This is not a solution by PayPal at all. Saying they sold some of their delinquent accounts to a debt collector doesn't solve why so many of us have received letters or emails from Jefferson Capital (JCap, as they call themselves on their website), saying we owe them money for overdue PayPal accounts -- when our accounts have never been in the red (negative balance). This is my case, as I've had a solid PayPal account without ever having a negative balance. But I got one of those letters from JCap.
If PayPal isn't willing to properly address this seeming scam by JCap, then I will file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (and the state) to force them to do something about this. Are you there, PayPal?? A non-generic response is expected.
