PayPal security issues

Hi everyone,

I just spent several hours on the phone with PayPal security team regarding requests for funds from my account.  I hung up on the first agent when he told me to go to RiteAid to buy an Ebay security card.  I questioned him repeatedly and he told me I was dumb.  The second agent wasn't much better, he sent me to an Allpoints ATM to verify my identity.  I called the number I found on Google and I feel like both were scammers. They also wanted remote access to my phone, which I allowed, but now also think that was a mistake.  In the end, I called my bank to cancel my debit card and block any online access to my accounts.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Now, I trust no one at PayPal.

Thanks for reading!

Hello @Boxerdog1

Welcome to PayPal's Community Forum. I'm sorry to hear about your recent experience. I can certainly say who you spoke with was not PayPal Customer Service. Our Customer Support would never ask you for you for remote access to your phone, ask you to go buy gift cards, or ask you to go to a third party ATM to verify your identity. Requesting new cards is a good place to start after allowing someone remote access to something like your mobile device, but I would also recommend updating all your passwords as well as reaching out to your mobile provider to inquire about how to scan your device for malware.

All that being said, I understand this all started with undesired money requests / invoices coming into your PayPal account. Here's how to cancel an invoice or money request.

After that's done, you may want to update your email address on PayPal. It sounds like your email address got on some phishing mailing list somehow. If you update your email address to something new and remove the old one, those fraudulent invoices and money requests should stop.

if you still need to reach our legitimate Customer Support, you can find the options listed in this Help Center article: How do I contact PayPal customer service?

Best wishes,
