Hi all. I received a notification from PayPal that someone sent me an invoice to make a payment of USD 500 for purchasing a anti virus software which I didn't make. Could I just leave it like that with out paying or how do I cancel or report this?

I received a "REQUEST FOR PAYMENT" from someone I didn't know.  I canceled this and it seemed it was done, but when I opened the invoice attached to this request, there was a toll-free number to call that needed to be called within 24 hrs of the cancelation.  I called that number and almost got tied up in a scam.  BEWARE.  DO NOT CALL ANY NUMBER ON THOSE FRAUD INVOICES.  They tried to get access to my computer "for my refund to be processed" and then tried gaining access to my phone by loading a "Quick Support" app which gives anyone access to your devise.

This warning needs to be in BOLD across the section in the request for payment section of PayPal when there is ANY suspicious activity.  It should not be hidden where customers such as myself does not see it until it is too late.  Luckly I stopped and disconnected my call.

I am just attempting to help everyone out!  BEWARE there are BAD people around us ALL THE TIME.

Paypal and all financial institutions all say that they never tell you to click links in emails or requests for money and they don't post their number anywhere but via help/contact on their actual website to contact them.

Scammers harvest email addresses and send out those requests hoping some email addresses are linked to paypal accounts and the unsuspecting recipient 'may' pay them not realising they are scams OR the scammers put phone numbers in the ''notes'' section so that as its a genuine paypal invoice you think the phone number is real and call it.

If you do call that number to query the transaction or cancel it they tell you that you need to pay a fee (sent not using Paypal) for them to be able to cancel the payment for you or try to hack your computer....that is the scam as they know it's unlikely you will click to pay any invoice or money request.

If there is a cancel option then cancel it, if not ignore it and hopefully it should time out at 30 days.

As long as you don't click to pay it then no money would be transferred....and don't phone any number in a 'notes' section.

I received a genuine PayPal email re a payment request with a fraud message within the request and a freephone number to call immediately . I signed in to my PayPal and the request was there. I did a reverse search in the number and activity started today and had 93 lookups. The chat was basically its an industry call centre and they were looking for card details. These scammers got round PayPal security by requesting from accounts and putting information within the request. When PayPal email you it looks as though the fraud info came from PayPal. Clever but if you do what we’ve been advised then there’s no risk. Don’t call the number and cancel the request. My amount was £749.99 for Waterstones gift card. Cheeky beggars.

My 84 Year old Mum, recieved 6 separate requests for payment of £749.99 for Waterstones vouchers. She has been scammed in the past and fortunately was wary enough to do nothing without checking first.

The request has a note attached

FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY FOUND IN YOUR ACCOUNT, AMOUNT £749. 99GBP HAS BEEN DEBITED FROM YOUR ACCOUNT FOR A PURCHASE OF Waterstones Gift Vouchers, IF ITS NOT YOU REACH US IMMEDIATELY@ [removed]

This is a Scam > Cancel the transaction.

Scam money request or invoice.

If you do call that number to query the transaction or cancel it they tell you that you need to pay a fee (sent not using Paypal) for them to be able to cancel the payment for you OR they will try and access your account telling you its to clear the payment when in fact they are hacking your computer.

If there is a cancel option then cancel it, if not ignore it and hopefully it should time out at 30 days.
As long as you don't click to pay it then no money would be transferred.

If they do NOT show in your paypal account then its just a spoof email trying to scam you by getting you to phone them.
