fraud & phishing
I felt devastated when last night discovered that my PayPal account has been compromised, criminals gained access to my account, adding an unknown Citi bank account, changed the setting so that all money came in totaling CA$2,800 was automatically transferred to that account opened in England. I’ve spent the past 36 hour trying to figure out the issues and recognized the significance of each section.
1. First of all, it was my fault to ignore the emails from PayPal that I considered scams which asked for my attention to unauthorized attempts to access my PayPal and a newly added bank account. The scenario was beyond my imagination. Nowadays, scammers bombard everyone, making it hard to separate the real from the vast majority of daily fake information. Hi-tech adds more complexities to the complicated world.
2. As searching, I found numerous PayPal accounts have encountered the same issue, which suggests a glitch in the system. PayPal has closed my unauthorized transaction report in 10 minutes and assured me no unauthorized transactions were detected. I appealed and received the same response. Moreover, the website makes it difficult to file complaints. I’m not expecting PayPal to compensate me but help me retrieve my money from the criminal’s account, which is accessible for their technicians if they’re willing to help.
3. All unknown accounts are from Citi bank. It isn’t difficult to identify these active accounts which receive a large number of transactions from PayPal, or elsewhere, every day. Although both PayPal and Citi bank are capable to tracing the destination of many victims’ money, when they don’t any action, these criminals grow bolder and fearless.
4. I don’t expect reporting to police will be somewhat helpful because I understand they’re also overwhelmed.
5. I am not going to curse these criminals who have established sophisticated international system to exploit ordinary people because the world has been running in this way. Weeping, whining, complaints won’t change anything but make them laugh. Crime has existed alongside human history, and now high-tech turns anyone into potential victim no matter where you live. They take advantage of the weaknesses scattering around the entire network and disconnections between each segment.
6. Lastly, please carefully examine your account and remove any suspicious bank accounts that weren't
added by you. Literally, no one can be more reliable than ourselves.
As a part-time tutor of 52, I strive to be a lawful person to the society, a kind and virtuous individual to all. My lose reflects 70 hours of my well-prepared tutoring work after 8 hours to make a living. I felt physical heartaches and couldn’t sleep for a whole night. I know this won’t be the worst scam in my life. However, I vow to be a virtuous individual even though I face with the darkness and dirtiness of the world. When we rely on anyone else, we usually receive disappointment. If my suggestion benefits you, my loss is meaningful. Collective ignorance fertilizes crime. Thank PayPal for providing this platform to exchange insights. Together, we might be able to fight against the evil.
