‘We're reviewing a payment you received…’

Hi All, I received an email from PayPal with subject ‘We're reviewing a payment you received’ on Saturday 13 November. The email went on to say ‘case to review a payment that may not have been authorised by the buyer. Until this case is closed, we may put a temporary hold on the transaction amount’. I immediately checked my PayPal account and saw the funds were being held with negative balance on my PayPal account. As you can imagine I am quite worried about the situation to say the least as it was in regards to quite an expensive item I sold via PayPal friends and family via Facebook marketplace. I mentioned to the buyer that they should always use PayPal goods and services when paying someone you do not know on PayPal as like many others, I have been scammed as a buyer. However, the buyer was still happy to pay via PayPal friends and family and it worked well for both parties that I accepted a PayPal friends and family payment for the item as I saved on fees and was able to sell for a price that I was happy with. I sent the item to the buyer with Parcelforce Express AM service and provided them tracking number/ proof of postage receipt immediately on Facebook marketplace. I also sent them a picture of the item wrapped up in the box with their address, and then asked them if they had received it the day after, to which they responded, yes they did. They even said thank you and that was that. I still have their address details, their PayPal email, the tracking receipt, etc. Once month later, as briefly mentioned above I received an email from PayPal saying they had opened a chargeback request with their bank saying that payment was not authorised by the buyer. I have not messaged the buyer at this point after numerous conversations with PayPal and do not think I will message them. I even spoke with PayPal about receiving a payment via PayPal friends and family and the woman on the phone said ‘there was no way the buyer could get a refund and it was safe to go ahead and send my item with them having paid via PayPal friends and family’. I have provided PayPal with the tracking proof of postage receipt, I have provided them with Parcelforce website screenshot saying item has been delivered, I provided them with Facebook conversation messages. I am still struggling to believe the buyer is trying to commit fraud and essentially commit theft here. Can anyone give me some piece of mind as to what may happen here and if the buyer will be successful with their attempt to get a refund? Any similar experiences anyone has had, etc. I look forward to hearing from you guys soon. Kind regards, Alex

Its against Paypal rules to accept a family / friends payment for selling goods and you risk your Paypal account being limited if you do so.

A buyer would not be able to open a Paypal dispute for non-receipt of item or item not as described as they would have no Paypal buyer protection.

However they can still open a dispute for an unauthorised transaction OR do a chargeback (via their card issuer) and you may well lose as you would have no Paypal seller protection.

@ kernowlass This is quite a worrying thing to hear. The buyer asked to pay via friends and family so I was a little confused why they did that. I even told them to be careful via friends and family because there is no buyer protection. You really think it is possible that I could lose out as a result of this situation? Is there anyone I could get in contact with such as my bank, citizens advice, etc to explain the situation?

Best to read up on paypals seller protection policy before you start using paypal to sell really.

All depends on if paypal thinks their transaction was unauthorised, as an unauthorised transaction means your account was hacked and used without your consent.

If and only if paypal agree they were hacked then of course they get a refund but you would not lose out if you met all the requirements of seller protection.

But as you accepted a friends/family payment you negated your seller protection unfortunately (maybe your buyer is more aware of this that you were)?
