Hi guys,
Apologies if this has already been covered in another question...
I'm looking to buy a bike from someone on Gumtree, and I'd like to pay him via "Pay After Delivery", so I can check I'm happy with the bike once it's been sent to me.
My question is, how do I activate this option when I send him the money? Is it automatically applied? I have a verified bank account, but does the bike seller also need to have a verified bank account for this option to become available to me when I send him the money?
Also, what happens if I wasnt happy with the bike in some way? How would I go about claiming money back that I've already "sent"? (but presumably not yet formally paid for)
Many thanks in advance,
Will

Pay after delivery does not give you any more protection than paying instantly.
The seller gets his money credited by paypal INSTANTLY by paypal as they do normally, but you just get extra time to pay for the item.
Have copied paypal info below. If the item is for collection YOU WON'T be covered for buyer protection. But if it is a physical item sent in the post and you pay using the goods / services option then you should be ok.
If you don't get an item you can file a dispute but read up on buyer protection first to make sure you fulfil that criteria.
What is Pay After Delivery?
Pay After Delivery is a payment method that we’re offering to selected customers, where you don’t pay for your item until after you’ve received it.
We pay the seller immediately, so they can send you the item straight away, but we wait for 14 days before we debit the money from your bank account. This gives you time to receive and view your item before you pay. If the item doesn't arrive or isn't what you expected, you’ve 180 days from the transaction date to report a problem as usual. Our Buyer Protection covers you for eligible items.
We only offer Pay After Delivery to selected customers with a confirmed bank account. If you’ve signed up for it, you’ll have the option to select it during checkout, but you may not be able to use it for all your purchases, including intangible goods and cross-border purchases.
If you sign up, it automatically becomes your default way to pay when it’s available. You can switch it off at any time, though. Here’s how:
- Log in to your PayPal account.
- Click the Settings icon at the top of the page.
- Under 'Payment settings', beside 'Payment preferences', click Edit.
- Under 'Paying after delivery is my preferred way to pay', click Turn this option off.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Thanks Kernowlass.
This is the bit in the terms that's worrying me: "Buyer Protection covers all your online purchases, on eBay or on any other website, when you use PayPal."
I'm not using a website though - I'm conducting this transaction individual-to-individual, as it's a Gumtree ad.
Also, I'm not collecting the item as you mentioned, I'm expecting it to be sent to me. So if I select the "pay for goods and services" option, and it doesnt arrive, you're saying I'm covered to get a refund, right? What if it arrives, and it's not in the same condition I was told it was? Who ultimately makes the decision in these disputed cases? Surely it's a case of buyer's word against the seller's word?
Many thanks for your help,
Will

You are still covered for non-receipt as long as its not a collect item BUT for you to be covered for item received but not as described you need to make sure that the seller puts a FULL description of what you are intending to receive on the money request or invoice.
Or you need to do the same if you send payment via the goods / services option.
If the item is received but not as described then you are correct in that it is often one persons word against the other which is why paypal "normally" find in favour of the buyer BUT you will probably end up returning the item back to the seller AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE trackable to prove delivery back there.
You need to read up on buyer protection and then risk assess your transaction.
