Recall A Completed Transaction

I have sent a rather large amount of payment to a friend's account for a personal reason by credit card which was completed. Now my friend is having a real nightmare getting the fund out because the transaction was for more than EUR 2,500. His Paypal account is now locked and the fund is being held until several IDs and personal documents are sent to Paypal. Now my friend decided that he wanted to reject the transaction and return the fund to me. Both of us use UK account. The money was supposed to be for personal use and not anywhere related to illigal activities. Now we are stuck as the money has been deducted from my credit card but my friend cannot get it out without going through several hassles.  The questions are:

- Would the fund be automatically returned to me if no action taken from my friend's side i.e. no proof of address or ID sent to Paypal to release the fund.

- How long would the procedure take?

- There was a fee of 3.4% charged to the recipient initially, would I be getting the full amount back or minus the fee?

Thanks for the advise!

Hi Momiji-2001,

Thanks for posting on the Community Forum and sorry to hear about this!

It sounds like your friend has now reached the set receiving limit with their account, which is in place for all accounts. PayPal are required by EU law to request additional verification information from all customers who reach this limit with their accounts.

If your friend decides not to provide the requested information, your transaction won't be automatically refunded, but your friend should be able to either refund the money themselves or have the transaction refunded manually by PayPal. If they want to refund the money but run into issues, please ask them to contact Customer Support directly.

If the payment is refunded, we’ll retain the fixed portion of the fee charged when the payment was sent. We’re not charging a fee for the refund, but simply retaining the fee, which has already been collected from the amount sent.

I hope this answers your questions 🙂

Sophie
